Newbie aiming for a 172. After my 106 GTI was written off :(

Hi all,

New to all this Clio sport stuff but am looking forward to getting to learn more and more about these great french cars. Sadly after owning my subtly modified 106 gti for 2 years almost, someone unfortunately gave it a shunt up the arse. So after having 2 106;s now, i fancy a change for something more modern. Hence the Clio 172

My GTI was running 147bhp wand i gotta say was amazing fun to drive at all times no matter what the weather was, and quite rapid. Am i making the right decision in going down the 172 route? Im after the xenons and leather etc and i just wanna learn a bit more about them before i rush into buying one. Nice to hear all your views

Plenty of ex GTi/VTS owners on here mate you have come to the right place!

172 is a step in the right direction, a modded GTi would probaly be as quick but then so are 172's

I personally think the cars for sale section should be free to view as if i was looking for a clio and didn't want to pay the fee then both people are missing out. But only members should be able to post there.

If your wanting Xenons then you will be looking for the 2001 Onwards Phase 2. They all have half leather unless purchasing a 172 Cup then its just cloth material due to weight saving. This website will teach you alot and if you defo want a 172 i'd suggest you become a paid member as theres lots of clios and parts for sale

Probably a step up from the GTI in all areas, although some are as fast as 172s with a few breathing mods! But i think the clio is far better place to be in!

Any ideas on your budget for the car? :approve:

cheers for the replies lads. Yea im focused on either a phase 2 cup or standard 172 with the leather etc either way i dont mind. lol. I did once have a lil play with a standard 172 in the GTI and i must say it was extremely tight, but then i had to bare in mind, the Clio was standard. But yea, im looking forward to getting one now.

As for price, i know i might struggle, but i have about 3500 ish, as im going on holiday on the 5th JUly lol Its all happened at a a bad time really.

All i can suggest is get out and try a few.

The ph1 is fun and cheap
The ph2 is 'apparently' slightly slower, but has auto wipers, xenons etc
The cup is more driver oriantated but is poverty spec

The ph1 you would get a minter for £3500
The ph2 and cup would be good, but imo you can get a better condition ph1 for the money
Try all three and see which fits you best

Whats the difference with the Monaco then? Or is that just what the colours called? as i have found a nice one in a deep blue?

Also, i got to wait until i get paid out, so once i have, if your cars are still for sale i shall deffinately be interested

the colour is monaco blue - and imo its the best colour, but i am biased!

i had a 106gti few years back, and now have a 172, and i personally found the 106 better at lower revs - but i didnt want another, hence the 172 (which ive grown to love)
