Newbie in a 182 or a 182 cup

Hi, new(ish) to here! I used to own a Clio Williams III and unfortunately sold it a few years ago when i moved to London. Was a brilliant little car!! I actually met the owner at Santa Pod last year so its still going strong and looked great! When i moved out of London, i did look at a 172 but decided on my current drive, a 2.2 VX220 - A thrill a minute! ;)

Anyway, to my question. My gf is due a get a new company car to replace a 206CC and the 182 is on the list, so i am heavily pushing for this over a lardy megane cab!. We have just picked up a 04 Clio 182 for a week long test drive. We asked her company for one with "cup" suspension...

But how do i know if this clio has cup suspension?? It seems quite firm. i dont want to order one with cup and find this had std and she moans about how hard the ride is... Who else has a 182 and did you choose cup over std? And why?

Off to give the Milton Keynes roundabouts some stick now :devilish:

cheers guys - it has silver wheels so the feckers havnt given us a cup  Gonna have to burn some rubber as it isnt mine!!! :D

Whats your take on the difference on the two? I am used to firm given the VXs crashy, hard suspension. Missus likes driving fast too!! Is it a good option for a everyday drive?

yes, you must have the cup suspension, it is a must have! The ride is fine, not bumpy but is so good for cornering, especially roundabouts!

I have standard suspension.Never had a single problem with it,never wished for the cup suspension. It handles very well and IMO the standard wheels are much nicer but i have to admit the Cup wheels look good on black.

If you have one for a blast in standard form give it a blast...you wont be dissapointed :D

I have just opted out of company car scheme, taken the cash and bought a 182 last month.

I do around 2000 miles a month so comfort was a major factor in my purchase.

I went for cup pack without it you have half the car. I do not regret this choice or my purchase. I actually look forward to the long drives as I can now enjoy myself at the same time. The ride is hard but perfectly acceptable as the up side is the superb handling.

I have added a tracker and upgraded the speakers which has made a big difference as well

  Full Fat 182 - Was..

go for the cup pack mate, it means the car will be more settled on the road and will have the stiffer tyers as well.

I had an hour test drive in a normal black 182 then a silver cuped 182 with the insane dealer that just egged me on to "destroy" the car or at least try my hardest too.

And i failed!

The black one was fast and handled well but giving the same amount of stick to the silver one it lapped it up and asked for more! the cup pack means that your less likely to get the trypod effect of three wheels as easly as without, and cornering is harder so your less likely to go, earth, sky, earth, sky, earth, sky, earth, ambulance...

get the pack and enjoy

:devilish:

james i thought it was easier for the tripod effect with the cup suspension as because its stiffer, the wheel will rise easier as there is less movement?

Youll only notice the diffrence if your driving on a track absolutely nothing init on the road!

I do have the standard suspension and IMO on the road driving hard you will not gain any advantage, went out with three cups on the weekend see driving tales and there was nothing between us so cant see there being a huge diffrence between the real cup and the 182 with "cup" suspension but when tom comes to the next breakfast club will be able to tell you.

thanks for the info guys (and girls??) Initial thoughts, though it was abit damp last night:

There is abit of torque steer, but not as much as my old Willy III. (or mk2 golf 16v!) What are your suggested tyre pressures? I will check tonight with a propper guage ;)

Ride - very good and absorbs the bumps well on the back lanes. Round islands its top notch, very direct, little role, point and she goes

Engine - wow! does that puppy LOVE to be revved!! A little short on torque lower down, but v tasty after 5000rpm (though noisy). Fractionally slower than my 2.2 vx220 imo.

Interior - its french so never going to be A1, rattles already at 4500miles. Steering wheel is a bit large/cheap esp the rubber thumb inserts. Seats are v nice in 1/2 alcantara. Clutch requires a strong leg! Heal and toe is possible but will require some practice

The missus has it today so will see what she thinks - the idea is that if she wants to "have the VX today" ( i should be getting a new VXR220 with adjustable Ohlins suspension next month! :devilish: ) then she has to have something i want to drive. Hopefully, the 182 will fit the bill (y)

All these without say its great without...all these with say its a must.

IMO im sure its great for on the track but the biggest majority of the average persons driving is not ramming it around corners like the stig in which case i cant see how for the biggest majority of the time its a must (Apart from on the track).

Driving ability is a bigger factor when giving it loads, two drivers of equal ability and i ll bet there is naff all betwwen the two cars in a race.

The debate of 182s with or without is up there now IMO with which is quicker....a 182 or a 172 cup.Its like splitting hairs.

Sod all in it,a better driver with standard will kick arse and the same better driver with cup will kick arse.Performnce wise its a close match IMO.

Driving ability would win the day. With or without is a matter of choice and good luck to these who went for it and the same to us who didnt. The car is much more than the suspension differences.:D
