Newbie Questions New Car Imminent!

  ph1 172... Sold:(
Hi All, all resonses to these queries very much appreciated

Okay so I've just put a deposit on a ph1 172 :D and I need to know the following.

i. It needs 2 tyres. Done a bit of a deal to offset the cost but I need to know if anyone has a reccomendation for a good tyre for this car which is a bit, well, budget. I can't afford to gun 200 notes on two Pilots in the first off, as the car is pretty much gonna dry me out. The Pilots on the rear are A1 (ish) so I'll probably swap em to the front but even on the back the worn one's won't last many months.

ii. Whilst only on 29k, the car is 5 1/2 years and has not had the cambelt done. How much should I expect to pay and is there a specialist in the Greater Manchester area? Or can I afford to leave it for now?

ps thanks to DarrenS for driving me over (and for letting me drive back.):star:

Yep, we need to get some piccies up as soon as you get it, Ste!

How's people's views on Reno Stealers for doing a simplish job like the cambelt? Maybe a post is required in the Dealerships thread to answer this?

Still can't believe you've got one! Driving-Miss-Daisy Golf to a 172!

P.S. You could PM Christopher (aka carbon copy), Ste. He had that mint Mk1 172 for a while, so he may know of a decent garage up towards us?

Cambelt is well over due, it is likely to snap day one of you driving it away from the garage.

PMurrey does them for £420 ish, Renault will do it for nigh on a grand. Average tyres are £50 a corner.

Is that PE2 as in pilot exalto 2?

If so how much should I pay for fitting?

Current (soon to be ex) car is a golf 1.4 so I've always just had budgets on that...

Done some searches and the best cambelt answer I've found was from Middo in another thread from earlier in the year, I think it said 400.00 ish, and the place was in Stoke. Anyone know the place? And if so is that for a 72k service or literally just the timing belt and pulleys?

DarrenS had his 24k service at Rentec and says the place was brilliant. But I can't very well drive all the way down there on just legal tyres and a possible time bomb under the bonnet can I?:clown:

get the cambelt and aux belt done asap!

YozzaSport (Stone) or RSTuning (Leeds) are good contacts...i have numbers for both if required.

you're looking at circa £500 including a service.

as for tyres, as taylor said, try costco or mytyres.co.uk

if the car's running the standard 15 inch OZ's you're looking at £50 a corner.

72k or 5 years

most go at 55 - 60k though. lol

...they're more sensitive to the age of the belt, rather than mileage

Thats risking it, decent mechs will say 60k or 3 1/2 years, on the side of caution.

Do a search and look at the mid-job piccies.

They have to take half the frikkin' car apart.

Not quite the 90 quid for your old GT eh?

I'd want to be paying £500 notes for a belt change including the full cam kit and a major service :)

As you've got the best model 172 :)p) tyres are relatively chepa as they are 195/50/15s, two Michelin Exalto 2 tyres will set you back under £100 fitted for the pair. Something like Eagle F1s will be less.

I've just read Ken H's thread on a snapped aux belt, would this be included in the timing belt job and if not how much extra?

By the way I'm not purposefully trying to stretch this out it's just that I've got alot of very nasty pictures in my head involving my new baby and my credit card...
