newbie with 182 but not impressed??

  Writen off dci 100
172 cup FTW!

i get just over 125 in 4th and as soon as i change into 5th it just stops pulling all together

  Did own 172 Cup + 182FF
They are not that quick - just nippy really. Turbo cars have similar power, but also decent torque and mid-range, so are a lot faster in real world road conditions

You buy them for the chassis really - my old 172 Cup was like a front wheel drive Elise!

The lack of straight line never really bothered me when I had the TVR, but now that's sold, it can be a bit frustrating if you are not on cam in the 182.

Still - nice chassis, cheap purchase price, good economy and running costs (relative to competition), means they are still great little cars.

hmm.. seems strange. I have a 172 (full fat altho I got told off for saying that the other day lol).. and it seems to pull upto 120 very quickly indeed.

altho you came from a turbo whereas I came from a heavy body rolling escort gti 115ps.

not tried what I get from 4th.

in my escort when I gave it some it felt near to blowing up or rather, sounded that way, even tho it never did. now I feel like I am going to kill my clio if I go above 5k altho I keep reading 5k is where the real power starts. how strong are these engines? will going to 6500+ in every gear every now and then do any damage? I heard the gearboxes are weak.

sorry for pinching your thread anyway... surely the 182 must be faster and I have seen 140+ on my speedo (yes I know it's not accurate) in a fairly short period of time flat out in 5th...

I've had Renaultsport Clios since 2004 (172 Cup, 182 and now 197)and they always get taken way past 5 k once warm. Then engine is the strongest bit tbh, very rare you hear of an engine failure

  Monaco RS Clio 172
what about the gearbox?.. read a few horror stories... I have no idea what it'd cost if it went, but I know it wouldn't be cheap. lol

I've had no problems, mechanical sympathy is the key imo ;) Probably done about 100k in different Clios!

  Monaco RS Clio 172
I was told not to boot it off the line and not to abuse 1st gear especially as the gearbox will simply fall apart if you do it alot. maybe I have been speaking to some very unlucky/paranoid people. and so far, it has turned me into one. lol

Seriuosly, you dont usally go above 5k :quiet: ... my new rev limit is at 7,900 & i have had it hit the limiter a few times  , obviously i dont drive like this every day, usally doesnt see above 4/5k when driving to work & always gets the oil change at 6k for fully synthetic goodness & the all imporant, always feather footed & not taken above 3.5k until oil is upto temp :) , gearbox "should" be fine providing your not raming it into every gear, just dont rush changes

  e92 + E46 M3 + Cup
Oh & hard down shifting on these gearboxs is meant to be a killer, heel to toe seems to be the best method

Noooooo its fine!!!!! Some people are too paronoid on here, tbh i wonder how some peeps actually get out the house on their own :clown:

obviously I have had it upto 6 or 7 a few times it is irresistable.. especially in 5th.. the other day I took it for a spin and I was stunned by how quick it hit 110 on a dual carriageway. this was late at night and I know it's irresponsible I don't need to be told.. but I just toed it off the roundabout thru the gears.. and it was a mental experience.

I am taking my time getting used to it tho as I have been warned to coming from a pretty much 100bhp car to it... it is alot and I mean ALOT faster than all of my previous cars... but yeah, I smile every time I give it some. just so used to worrying about it going bang that I find it hard to not feel guilty when I do use the power lol

nooo dont worry, they love having a good wringing tbh!!! 3rd gear is best ;)

do you usually say for example if you go down country lanes, as you come upto bends and hit the brakes, go from 3rd to 2nd then revs right back up then into 3rd then down again and constantly keep it at high high revs? this is what is tempting with it.. my way home from work is all lanes when I drive to jobs.. and I just get sooo tempted but feel as tho I may break the box.. you say hard down shifting and heel to toe... roughly what do you mean lol..

if I'm on a quiet road plodding along and want to tear off, I will drop it into 3rd, sit it at about 3k, let it wind itself to 3k slowly, then toe it usually... but I keep backing off when I get to certain speeds as it is scarily faster than my previous cars and feels so light on it's toes.. but don't get me wrong it feels SO much better handling. the esp on mine is always on and I have never had it flash yet except when it rained.. lol

  e92 + E46 M3 + Cup
I still get it wrong some times  practising for the track & hopefully extended life of the cheese box.. i mean erm.. gearbox lol

Yes mate you really wanna keep it in the "power band" when in the country lanes" i usally keep the engine humming around 4-5k when on the twistys, thats when the mpg goes lame lol

  Monaco RS Clio 172
you know what, I used to do something similar in escort but I never done it as that says IE correctly.

I used to be coming upto a bend reasonably quickly, clutch down, rev upto required revs, release clutch, THEN brake. I never did it at the same time. but it always seemed better than just ripping the clutch up.

the clio seems to rev very quickly with a light touch on the throttle tho.. so it may be difficult to master

given me something to mess about with anyway lol

is a remap expensive?

I am definately after getting mine done and rr'd, but I wanted to get a maxogen/bmc first, along with a full magnex catback.

it'd make it more worthwhile right?

the remap increases the limiter from 7 to 8? that is madness lol

bet it sounds nice tho with a full system and decent filter.. not to sound like a max power teenager. these engines do sound lovely jubbly with a nice filter tho. mine really growled when I first got it. took mine off due to being a crap filter tho and reducing my power.

does it not do damage reving to 8?

  e92 + E46 M3 + Cup
the limiter kicks in at just under a ton in 3rd

Guy at work couldnt belive the speeds it can pull off in 2nd & 3rd, always seems that people assume its still like a 1.2,1.4 etc.. but then when you take them out in it

plus 7,500rpm on a power flow & decat the noise is unreal lol

  e92 + E46 M3 + Cup
JUst make sure its all serviced well, oil thats been in there for 20k miles is gonna do your engine no favors but providing its all looked after taking it too 7k shouldnt be a problem, thats what there built for! i think you cant bit fastchip for the remap - http://www.fastchip.nl/component/pa...acturer_id,0/option,com_virtuemart/Itemid,26/

Group N map is the daddy  , hanks maps for the money are ace! where abouts are you based mate? can show you what near 8k sounds like if your near surrey

  Monaco RS Clio 172
you're only in surrey, not too far, you'll have to take me out in yours with decat and full system with the limiter moved, VERY interested to see the difference. I have never actually known anyone with a 172 properly, or been in one before I bought mine. only seen them go a few times. mine is totally std engine and exhaust.

  Monaco RS Clio 172
I'm in kent, but right on the edge, not to sound lame lol

not too far from crawley gatwick way

  Monaco RS Clio 172
looks very nice matey :)

I spent 7 hours painting my calipers yellow properly and it came out ok.. that's about all I have done so far! owned it 3 weeks sunday

Got any pics mate? well if your in the area drop me a pm, i'm located in staines, Junction 13 on the m25, can take you for a spin, no ali g remarks though lol

  Monaco RS Clio 172
woah woah l a p d man lol

you one bad muva f--ker man lol

http://s508.photobucket.com/albums/s329/lbenmore2k8/clio/

just done a few quick pics earlier of my brakes.. they are dirty in that pic and so is the car. that tree it isnext to on the drive is firing dust all over it. usually park behind another car so not leaving it there long.

it needs a decent wash altho I didn't wash it that long ago (3 days lol) and I polished it.

tomorrow it's getting full wash, polish, wax then I'm gonna take some decent pics. altho my camera is crap aswell which doesn't help at all.. lol

  Monaco RS Clio 172
quick question

at this time of year, are you finding a million dead flies on your front bumper/plate/some of screen aswell and even a few on the roof which I didn't think possible?

maybe I'm just driving too fast

  e92 + E46 M3 + Cup
Looking good  , need to colour code the bump strip badges to set it off, needs to get looooow to ;), you will always find things to spend money on with these.. saying that though i think that saying goes for all cars lol.. you planning to start modding soon or just bits at a time?

  172 ph2
The thing is you can drive it normal day long but you need to start bouncing off the rev limiter before the fun starts imo.

I reckon I hit the rev limiter more times in the first month of owning the clio then I did in a year of having the mk4 golf gti :D

I think I probably abuse my gearbox more than I should tbh... I do change down alot at speed to either slow down or get into the peak power band... I do try and match the revs first but I suspect I'll kill it sooner or later.

  Monaco RS Clio 172
I am after getting a decent air filter ie bmc cda or maxogen, and I got my eye on a ful magnex catback at the mo.. possibly tinted windows and eventually when funds allow coilovers.

obviously a remap too.. goes without saying :)

omp strut brace I got my eye on but it looks a b**ch to fit.. I don't really like the idea of drilling my car lol

  Clio 172 mk2
Quite an unremarkable car performance wise really (lack of torque low down) but bloody grippy round corners which is where the fun is to be had

Jesus, my car gets so nannied compared to people in this thread.

Just feels like its going to explode after 5k.

2nd, 3rd. Probably only ever see 40mph in 2nd. 3rd is good fun to about 70. But 100 in 3rd ?!?! 80 in 4th max.

Never been flat out. 120 is the fastest its been.

I am officially ghey.

i got one of these but there is no group N for my ecu

so iv got one that increases your rev limiter (only when the engines warm) i think it designed for running your car on 98 oct fuel

definately worth 150 quid (delivered)

Hi, ive just bought an 05 clio 182 done 27k one owner, the car is lovely however i dont think its very quick.

Ok you notice the cam at 5000 but its just not exciting, so now im thinking there maybe something wrong with it

It does hold back from cold and is slightly rough on tick over so is this the problem?, there are no lights on although and it doesnt seem to want to go anywhere near 130mph 110 and im board.

Now ive driven a fair few cars but havnt had a fast car for at least 1 year the last being a corrado with a 1.8t 20v in it.

I hope there is something wrong with is otherwise id be gutted any help would be great.

One last thing whats the differance between the 182 and the 182 cup?

Firstly, welcome to the club.
To be honest I think you should have done a bit more research before you bought. Did you give it a test drive? Always make sure you open the throttle nicely on a test drive.
I think it would be a good idea to get somebody who can drive a 182 (properly) in the car with you for some twisted action, it is very capable round the bends. I'm afraid if it's all out speed your after then a clio isn't the right car for you my friend, it starts to feel even slower after a few months (unless you get the hang of it).
IMO though the 172/182 is the best you can buy for that price range, love em.

are those brembo discs any good ?

Well they feel better than what was on there before but my old discs were about 2mm grooved when i bought it so they just had too go.. my car really needs a brake fluid change though, dont think its been done since it was built in 2002 :dead: but gonna hold out till i get the bradded brake lines in, saves me buying the fluid twice, they should be on this month ;) , still running standard pads, have no issuse's with them for fast road use.. may be a diffrent story when its on the track though lol
