Could gravel traps become less effective if not in a waved shape surface? Also not raking it from time to time to reduce settling?

I think if they are waved, they tend to launch the car into the air.
I think that's why a lot of circuits have tarmac run offs now.

Yeah rutted gravel trap = take off time. And I agree, had the suspension been attached, it would have slowed the car down a lot.

Isn't it remarkable that with all the technology available, old tyres are still the best and most popular means of retarding a race car. ( And they're cheap too).
