Nicole the 432 Valver :) (Otherwise known as The YOJ)

  Clio 16v 'YOJ'
Made a new thread due to wanting to change how I wrote it, Mods please delete the old one

Hello all, so this thread begins on a dark Sunday night (6/1/2013), I had been to the C16V new years meet the night before and really fancied owning another clio, was talking to chip about the mini and its oil burning condition we decided it was probably the rings and as I had only just re-built it I didn't want to do anymore damage to the engine and decided I should probably get a better daily car.

I was chatting to one of the other valver owners that lives near me in swindon and he suddeenly sends me an ebay ID and tells me to check it out, sure enough up came this 432 valver in plymouth for £275 buy it now. However it was cheap for a reason, the bottom end on the engine was knocking and so needed a new lump, I did however know the standard engines for these can be bought for peanuts as nobody wants them!

I'd always wanted to own a valver since I was 16, but never really had one as I bought the mini instead, alot of this boils down to the people on the owners club at the time - a lot of these people have left the club now and the people that now go to meets are sound :)Text the owner to see if he would take £200 lol and he said no it owed him £275 and he knew he would get that for it, so I agreed to buy it and paid a £50 deposit and agreed to collect it on the 14th.

Now I just had to find a new engine, thought it would be easy but it wasnt lol. Took me two days of searching and in a last ditch effort I messaged one of the welsh members on facebook and he said that he did actually have one spare, it had been reconditioned in 2011 as well :)

After I had agreed to buy this engine I had about 5 PM's on the owners club offering engines for sale, typical right?

Anyway went on to buy new cambelt and oil filter:

cambeltandoilfilter.jpg

Bought all new engine oil, coolant, power steering fluid and gearbox oil from one of the valver owners known as "Mr Tranself" as he is involved with one of the oil companies for a total of £50 delivered!

4 Sleepless nights went by, was absolutely buzzing to get the car running and on the road and so came the day to go collect the engine. I left at 11:30am and got back in cov for 4pm - Long day driving! I'd been thinking of an appropriate name and decided that Nicole was the perfect name for two reasons 1) The car was an N reg 2) The original Renault marketing campaign involved a character named Nicole.

When I got home, the challenge of lifting the engine out of the car and into the garage came, only we didnt have a crane, I got my housemate Neil (otherwise known as golum in the pics below) to give me a hand lifting it. We put loads of tyres on the ground so we could just lift it up and onto each tyre and eventually got it in the garage:

IMG_0991.jpg

IMG_0993.jpg

IMG_0994.jpg

I left a rather clio sized hole at the front of the garage as well :)

Time moved slowley over the next few days till sunday arrived and I made the journey down to plymouth to pick up my new car :)

Upon arrival we saw the clio straight away and liked it straight away :) there was a few things the owner hadnt told me about such as:

Central Locking doesnt work
Arch still had primer on it
Door doesnt close when you slam it
Boot lock doesnt work
Engine cuts out when its cold enless your revving it
Front tyres need replacing
Mould on the parcel shelf and on the rear floor mats
Front Fog lights dont work
Sunroof or Aerial leaks like a sieve
Sunroof doesnt work
Pass side window wont go back up on drivers switch

Quite a bit of work to do as you can see however, im not fazed I'll get the work done. So I bought the car and rang the AA to coem and get me as the engine was knocking. A recommended mechanic arrived an hour later to make an official diagnosis on the poor valver; a quick decision later he pronounced it "f**ked" and recommended recovery of the vehicle to Coventry. Another hour passed and the first recovery truck arrived, Nicole was loaded onto the back of it and the great journey began!

The next stop was Exeter to be loaded onto an official AA truck, we were early and so we off loaded it while waiting for the AA Man:

Soon the massive AA truck turned up, loaded her up and the next leg of the journey began:

7 Hours and 1 more truck change later we turned up in Coventry got the car on the path, emptied my stuff out from it and went to bed. It was 2:30am at this point, the next morning 5 hours after arriving via the AA, I was buzzing to do something with the car, but it was still snowing and Id managed to get myself comfy on the couch wrapped in my duvet. I eventually got the the car in the back garden and got some photos of it in the garage:

And finally Clio met the new F7P :) to be fitted on Sunday :)

So Kiz from c16v came round with a friend to give me a hand fitting the new engine, didnt take many pics as it was snowing a blizzard while we were working.

Ggot the car up on stands the night before:

The tapping sound has since calmed down, buzzing it was working! Couldnt get the air filter on as it was too cold and the rubber went really hard, waited till next morning to drive it after I put the filter on. Warmed the filter on the gas hob and it went on like a hot knife through butter.

Slid on some snow/ice and went into a traffic light. I was absolutley gutted to say the least, rang my dad up verging on the edge of tears and he told me to take some more pictures, then take the panels off and send some more and that we would fix it, it was only bent metal he told me :)

I worked out I needed:

Bumper
Bonnett
Wing
Headlight
Boomerang
Subframe
Wishbone
Wheel

The whole corner of the car needed replacing as well.

I sourced a new 432 Front end from a williams 3 for £110 and then got it fitted v loosley.

Got the car home about 10am friday morning and me and dad immediatly set about work. After about 10 mins looking at it, my dad insisted that it could easily be out and we could get it back to shape.

So we set up the ratchet strap with the telegraph pole and pulled it all roughly to shape:

Set about getting the creases out of the flat piece that the headlight sits ontop and the front cross member:

IMG_1098.jpg

End of day 1 we had this:

IMG_1099.jpg

IMG_1100.jpg

IMG_1101.jpg

IMG_1103.jpg

IMG_1105.jpg

Day 2, we didnt take many pictures, spent the whole day re-building the inner wing as I couldnt get a brand new panel.

CFA21F49-1BC0-4027-81BD-EDB5C8437F00-4213-000004ED15D9E02D.jpg

B176E8F2-D220-4721-B347-95ACDD7BACE5-4213-000004ED0FB8CE29.jpg

As you can see there was alot of rust to patch up, basically we cut the inner wing off, bashed it to a rough shape then used the passenger side as a guide to make it fit the headlight. Spent a few hours or so putting panels on seeing what doesnt fit and why then removing it and bashing and getting it all to fit right then trying again.

End of day two, we has it all welded up and patched all the rust on it and was ready for finishing up today (Sun 27th)

Started about mid day because both me and my dad had some errands to get done, and well we got it finished so we underslead the sections we repaired:

Fixed the exhaust as we noticed it had oil and grease all over the downpipe - it was touching the driveshaft. Beat the subframe and wishbone so it was semi square and much better and more importantly safer to drive.

And how she finished as of about 4 hours ago:

Needless to say My father is a magician and without him YOJ wouldnt have been brought back to life. I am picking up a willaims subframe and widetrack to bolt on, on wednesday and hope to have it fitted by Friday then YOJ will be back to normal :)

Thanks for reading!

  Clio 16v 'YOJ'
So the past day or so, have been removing the subframe ready for the williams jobby thats im going to collect in a few hours:

Shocks off:

IMG_1121.jpg

IMG_1123.jpg

Shizzles undone:

IMG_1122.jpg

IMG_1124.jpg

Was steaming ahead untill the last two bolts became a massive problem (the two bolts at the rear of the subby) as usual the cages broke and so the nuts were just spinning, eventually managed to round the drivers side off. Left it for the night and cracked on this morning. cut the drivers bolt off and prised off the cage on the pass side, with golums help managed to get the pass side off just fine. Lowered the subby and removed the steering rack so that I didnt have to undo the power steering pipes and heres the result:

IMG_1125.jpg

IMG_1127.jpg

And you can see the crease here:

IMG_1126.jpg

Doesn't look too bad as we straightened it out a bit :)

Going to go collect the subframe and widetrack today and hopefully over tomorrow and friday get the car back on its wheels and fully functional again!

Cheers for reading

Great thread and hats off to you and your dad ( especially dad)! He did a smashing job on the front.

  Clio 16v 'YOJ'
A fellow TM member ;-) bad times for the crash looking like things are getting better though :)

Ahh Hello bud! I forgot you had a clio! Yeah this is what im doing atm while the mini is sitting on my parents drive, it needs a turbo rebuild rolling road day and potentially a re-hone or rebore. Its all money I cant afford atm so bought this cheap but ened up crashign it :/

YOJ from 7 years ago, impressed this is still in existence!

Yeah shes still going bud :)

Will update with more progress after I have eaten, literally just got in from the garage

  Clio 16v 'YOJ'
Okay so today progress:

Got started about 3:30pm as I had uni lectures and had to do some running around. Picked up the new subframe bolts from renault as well, was in a cba type mood and was going to leave it all till tomorrow then I remembered that I had tax untill end of tomorrow, oh waittt I just relised today :( Anyway I was motivated to have a play with it tomorrow but I guess not :(

Anyway here are the piccies:

New subframe built up:

IMG_1132.jpg

Clio meet new subframe:

IMG_1133.jpg

Few hours passed and it got dark and had no electricity in the garage so I put two extensions together and nicked the lamp out the front room and the bulb from housemates fish tank to create:

IMG_1135.jpg

So spent a few hours and roughly got the subby to line up:

IMG_1136.jpg

IMG_1137.jpg

Finally end of day:

IMG_1138.jpg

IMG_1139.jpg

IMG_1140.jpg

I had the drivers side all built up with the driveshaft on etc then realised I couldn't get the downpipe on with the driveshaft located so had to take it all apart again :(

Anyway all I have left to do tomorrow is:

Undo Track rod ends and turn then out a bit to match the widetrack
Fit Downpipe
Connect rest of exhaust
Connect Gear Linkage
Fit Driver Side Driveshaft
Fit Driver Side coilover
Fit Driver Side Caliper
Fit Both Subframe rear bolts
Torque Hub Nuts
Fit Wheels
Drop on the deck

So Hopefully Ill have it done tomorrow as I have uni from 10 - 11 :)

Cheers for reading!

Okay so have had some issues since our last update.

Everything was going together swimmingly until it came to winding out the tie rod ends, literally just that and the brake lines left to do.

The passenger one came off the ball joint and undid the pinch bolt no bother and I could adjust it easily.
The driver side however was seized onto the hub and the pinch bolt wouldnt undo and ended up rounding that off. I then sawed through the pinch bolt in and attempt to relieve the pressure and hammered a chisel into the groove, I tried to unwind the whole hub assembly (as was still attached) and even that wouldnt undo.

I gave up for the friday as I had to go back home for work and this was the state of play:

The only thing left to do really was to order new track rod ends and heat the old one up to get it off.

Sooooo track rod end it was time for round 2:

Set the rubber on fire during the process though lol, left it for an hour to cool down and then set about getting it off of the track rod itself, turned it to the side heated it up to cherry red and then tried turning it, but the spanner just rounded on the tie rod. Got some mole grips and set them up. Then I turned the track rod upside down and kept the blow torch on it for about 5 minutes, when I took the torch off the track rod end was glowing orange, got hte spanner on it and with some force it finally started to undo. It made a hell of a squeaking sound and had a few sparks (like when your grinding) but eventually came loose - took forever for it to stop glowing red lol.

I win :D

Unfortunately Euro Car Parts cant get me new ends until Friday, so it will be a case of tightening up my shocks, refitting the front bumper and basically getting the car ready apart from the rod ends on friday. Im going to cut the brake lines off and get soem new copper nickel ones made up by local motorfactors back home because the ends have rounded.

Other than that shes progressing nicely and easily :)

Thanks for reading! :)

Okay so got the car back on the road :D

was thursday and while I waited for my rod ends to turn up I thought I had better rebuild the rest of the car :)

Spent an hour on it and got the following re-fitted:

Heat shield
Bumper
Coilover
Hub

Went to uni and got back there was one of those "we missed you" cards, only it said it was next door, went banging on the door no one in. Gave the house a quick reccy and banged on the kitchen window. Still no answer. Got really paranoid and noticed their boiler chimney was smoking so the hot water was being used so I started staring at their house for any sign of movement, I decided they were in the shower and left them 10 minutes after the boiler turned off and still no answer, only I noticed the front window was unlocked and the handle was open. I went back into my house and was debating whether to break into the house for my parcel LOL, luckily my housemate turned up and distracted me before I did anything stupid and the guy came home and gave me the parcel lol.

Got the new track rod ends on:

Was adjusting the coilovers and forgot to jack the car up before taking the wheel off and broke the drivers wing [AGAIN] :( so need another one of those, and it popped off the bottom ball joint which luckily the whole thing happened because I forgot to put the bolt in for the bottom ball join and the wheel was then stuck in the arch and bumper like so:

She's all fixed now with the whole front end from a williams 3, apart from the engine, rack and passenger wing (which I have in my bedroom).

Drives like a dream I'm really really happy with it, my cliosport membership pack turned up today as well so will put those stickers on it and tax disc holder then will get more pictures.

We are planning to fix the arches and make it a nice tidy car again :)

Thanks for reading!

Okay little update:

Had to weld a new flange on the downpipe as old one was shot and was blowing like a c**t

I bought Zmasters group a scuttle induction to fit, but its being used to make molds from atm for the group buy, but today my battery in teh boot kit turned up so I set about fitting:

Bolted down in the boot with my new caravan quick release terminals:

In between the rain I ran the lines through the car and put the distribution block here:

All wired up lovely, just need to chop the battery tray and the scuttle and its pretty much ready to fit
icon_smile.gif

I have a strut brace I want to fit so might get that painted up in monaco blue before fitting the scuttle induction and get everything ready for that.

Really is coming along nicely and im just enjoying driving it tbh, bought a full set of toyo t1r's and am currently planning a 172 conversion running around 200bhp NA power :)

"I was chatting to one of the other valver owners that lives near me in swindon and he suddeenly sends me an ebay ID and tells me to check it out, sure enough up came this 432 valver in plymouth for £275 buy it now. However it was cheap for a reason, the bottom end on the engine was knocking and so needed a new lump, I did however know the standard engines for these can be bought for peanuts as nobody wants them!"

I was going to go F7R but have since decided F4R is going to be my best bet. Found a crashed 172 that had been through a hedge spinning - has had the beltws dephaser water pump etc etc changed in October sooo £600 later:

Thanks guys :) should be more updates tomorrow - I have work at 5 so might have to wait a little bit to see those.

Going to bed now so i can get an early start want the 172 lump out by tomorrow if possible :)

  Clio 16v 'YOJ'
Yeahhh you guys noticed I broke the drivers wing again :p

Today I didn't really get anything done on the 172, however I spent the day stripping the P down.

Managed to get the P stripped down and discovered it was the bottom end that was shagged.

Today was a bit unproductive, was underneath the car removing the fuel lines when someone turned up to give me my pure motorsport aircon delete kit:

Woohoo :)

So set about trying to get the engine out. Now kiz taught me to work from the underneath to the top when removing an engine in a valver so I applied this to the 172, all I have left was the cat to remove from the manifold when the nuts were rounding. There was no room at all to cut the nuts so I got the old boy and this was our chosen method of removing the studs from the manifold:

8A0BFD82-7B51-4464-AE87-1530D14979DA-1140-000001D67C78171A_zps301887d7.jpg

Yes we busted out the oxy acetylene welding torch and melted them from the manifold which eventually released the cat Woohoo :)

Only lost 2 hours :(

So only had about 2 hours left before i had to finish to get ready for work and I had the rad/aircon pipes and front cross member panel out:

So not a very good day but its okay Ill get the engine out tomorrow as im almost there now.

  Clio 16v 'YOJ'
So I pulled my back muscles right down my spine yesterday and couldn't really get anything done today because im in too much pain :( I didn't have enough time last night to update the forums soooo I can kinda progress by giving you guys an update :D

So I spent a few hours undoing LOADS of electrical stuff that renault has added since the f7 days. Eventually this was the result:

IMG_1306_zps8ffde62e.jpg

Had trouble getting the engine out with the manifold on, so we had the engine half lifted out the bay with me climbing all over it and the car to reach round the back to undo the 10mm nuts holding the bugger on! Pretty sure this is where I pulled my back lol!

IMG_1307_zps53022d9d.jpg

Started comparing the 172 bay to the valver bay and its VERY VERY similar as is the subframe - literally the only diff on the subby is where the front of it mounts to the car! The exhaust tunnel on the 172 is identical to the valver one as well! Which makes me think renault initially designed the exhaust on the valver to come out where the 172 one does.

Anyway I've been very interested in keeping PAS on the valver with the f4r conversiona nd I couldn't find anyone other than matteh who had done it - matteh modded his valver rack to move the pipes in a similar way to the 172 pipes. I thought I would try and see if the 172 rack fits on a valver as that would be the easiest way to keep pas and also give us a mroe up to date rack which will have spares for (such as track rod ends) in a better supply. Initial results are that the bolt spacing is the same on the 172 and the valver but the 172 rack mounts are thinner. This isn't an issue because they unbolt from the subframe, so in theory you can unbolt the rack from teh 172 and the mounts for it and bolt it all onto the valver subframe, the column uses the same type of bolt and nut on the UJ as it does on the valver and so a ph1 172 rack is pretty much a straight swap!

HOWEVER

it is becoming a common fault on these that the steering rack bushes wear out and so makes the rack move after a few years and so I have bought some new renault bushes to replace the old ones just incase! Furthermore as the 172 rack is designed to fit the 172 widetrack it should be perfect for both 172 track and willy track :)

Pics:

IMG_1308_zps7fc0805c.jpg

IMG_1309_zps576cc628.jpg

As you can see they are v similar :)

I was going to get the 172 rack fitted today however as im unable to move much Its not going to happen till about tuesday, as thats when new bushes come in from renault :)

So the day ended about 3 as I had work at 5 with the engine out the 172 and pretty much all my theories with the PAS confirmed from the 172

Oh and I ruined my new pair of chinos as the pas fluid seeped through the overalls into them bah!

IMG_1315_zps06277771.jpg

Today I finished getting the 172 rack off (only had track rod ends to undo) and got it on teh bench to notice the steering rack gaiters are split and really old so have a new pair to go on tomorrow :)

More updates soon! I have to fit new rear shoes adjust h brake and mot wifes ph3 before I can play valvers again :(

Cheers for reading!!!

  Clio 16v 'YOJ'
Okay couldnt do anything on Friday because I pulled my back moving the F4R engine, I spent the weekend getting the wifes car running again and MOT worthy and today I had a late start 11 and early finish 3 because of work and discussing my exhaust options with dad and grandad.

I decided it would be best to repalce both rack gaiters while it was out - a whole £13 from ECP! I got the 172 rack mocked up on the subframe, just waiting for my new bushes to turn up tomorrow from renault before final fitment:

D5BD54DD-C747-4CDA-BD5C-EE34B87221D3-4872-0000063BEC98674B_zpse666b392.jpg

I have also noticed the 172 rack is 2 1/4 turns lock to lock whereas the valver was 2 3/4 turns so its a quicker rack :)

I then got the aircon delete fitted - what a pain in the arse, the pure motorsport guide I found pretty unhelpful and could of just figured it out for myself in less time tbh:

EBCBB53F-0313-4E64-869C-7AFB5ECAD7DE-4872-0000063BF7F9C85D_zps9c090a86.jpg

3 pulleys in total! Should definitely have a positive affect :)

And finally I swapped the speedo drive clips over as well:

Woohoo!

Wiring is set for tomorrow and so is getting the steering rack mounted final fit then its engine in time on weds and hopefully running by thurs morning :)

  Clio 16v 'YOJ'
Alots been happening this week, been SO busy its untrue. Got the gf's car ready for its MOT on Sunday MOT was booked for Weds and it failed on rust, brake lines and top mount so lost a day and a half there.

Anyway I started on the wiring as per f0xy's guide:

I started by separating out the 4 different plugs on the 172 connector:

6A188027-F9C2-4F35-B33B-33E109A150E9-8978-000009F9D201EBB8_zpsc9949725.jpg

A little bit of soldering later:

41D22E9B-4172-46BE-8EEB-65F82103744B-8978-000009F9D8252099_zpsb15d14f0.jpg

Looking like a mess, but kept going and it was like this half hour later:

9DB1F4FB-CCF8-44CF-949E-5514EF0DD0E5-8978-000009F9DD35CE06_zps86418bac.jpg

The next day I set about wiring in the aux dials and the OBD port, I stripped the relevant wiring out of the mk1 loom:

7FFB2328-DCA4-4D75-AFA4-814A5F7C502D-8978-000009F9E902D685_zps6926d791.jpg

Just so anyone else know this is the oil level and temp sensor:

663A6366-35A7-48B1-B22E-3237EF4A6C4B-8978-000009F9F6EE860D_zps2db833f1.jpg

You need a t-piece to put the mk1 oil pressure sensor (from the back of the engine) for the gauge

Finally finished all the wiring, I left the remainder of the MK2 plug in until I get the car running:

DE5986E2-F52F-461E-B800-3B455A42645B-8978-000009FA01140DE6_zps40b8e213.jpg

Fitted the new oil filter as I have new oil to put in:

Next thing was to place the engine in the bay and start building the zorst.

Using f0xys thread as a guide quickly noticed that while he was able to keep the standard center section back for the zorst the way he did it meant he could never fit a cat on his car, this wasn't a problem for him as it was a track car - however I'm using mine as a road car so we are modifying the 172 manifold and cat to fit in the car and then modify the center section to fit.

So as you can see this is how it fits as standard:

and this is the cat on its own:

And some shots of the exhaust which is pretty much finished now as well, bought some flanges and some 2.5" stainless tubing and a flexi join. I didn't want to run the standard flexi join s**t that renault put in because when it rusts it becomes a nightmare to get undone and the fire rings are expensive and I didnt want to buy another one at £50 odd a pop, so we are putting a proper flexi join further down:

This is the link pipe that is going from the manifold to the cat, we have lobbed the curves off on the cat and welding a new flange onto that so if I need to take the engine out again its going to be easier:
