what size of card should i buy? what sort of shots is the standard lense suitable for?

I've got a 4gb ultra performance card. Good for around 2500 photo's in 6m pixel standard quality photo's.

I have no idea with the lense, only got mine y.day know nothing about camera's yet, haven't even had it out of auto mode.

Your kit lens will zoom from 18-55mm assuming its that lens. Its good for wide angle and general walk around, not long enough for wildlife, sports etc. If you zoom it to 55mm and get close to the minimum focusing distance it should be fairly good for close up.

Yes its a 18-55mm lense. Can't zoom very much though. 35mm is approximately eyesight.

If you can, stretch for the bundle with the 55-200mm too.

Standard lens is great, but I felt really limited when it came to zooming, so ordered this a day later.

Ive got 4 of 5 2GB ones. I rather that than a 16GB one. I know the chances of it failing are slim..
