Nikon D5000 & 10-24

Dont like the name, sounds too canonish ;)

That wideangle looks promising, I would be interested to see how it differes from the Nikon 12-24mm.

Going to have the same sensor as the D90 and D300 so should be pretty good. Flip down screen too. ooooo

why dont nikon do iso 100 as standard ?

Just how the sensor is designed, most can be extended down to 100 but the base level is nearly always 200. I'm guessing the reasons are far more technical than any of us could understand, but from everything I've read is not actually a problem.

^^ not at the moment:

Nikon D90 with 18-105mm ED VR Lens £759.99

Nikon D5000 Digital SLR plus 18-105mm lens £899.00

If this camera is going to fit between the D60 & D90 it needs to be around £600 max IMO, but current pricing puts its ahead of the D90!!!!!

LOL! How is it logical for it to be more than the D90?

Seems totally pointless to me. Curious about the 10-24mm tho..

Where did you get those prices from? Miles out, according to Nikon it actually looks like this with the recent price hikes (and the D5000 isn't officially being offered with the 18-105)...

D60 Body: £399.99
D60 + 18-55mm VR: £479.99

D5000 Body: £719.99
D5000 + 18-55mm VR: £799.99

D90 Body: £849.99
D90 + 18-105mm VR: £1029.99

Warehouse express.... but...

Jessop Prices:

D60 18-55 VR £379.99

D5000 18-55 VR £799.99

D90 18-105 VR £799.99

The D5000 needs to come down a fair bit to fit between the 60 and 90.

They will no doubt change at some point. Always a bit weird when a new camera comes out anyhow, they usually maintain a reasonably high price around release time, but then settle into the usual discounts on RRP after a little while.

Its a little weird, if anyone chooses a D5000 over a D90 I will be confused (based on current pricing!).

Once it's out I would expect the D5000 kit to be around £650 at retail, which considering what the camera is actually packing is pretty reasonable imo. Give or take a few things it's basically a D90 in a D60 body with the AF motor missing.

The swivel screen alone would make Live View/HD Recording soooooo much easier, if this is a sign of future Nikon DSLRs then it's a very good sign.

As above, cracking little camera tbh, at the moment, i'd rather have the 3" screen on the D90 but the swivel would come in handy, for macro stuff and close to the ground pictures.

D5000 uses same lenses, jut no focus motor as per D40. I have been using a D5000 for a few days now to decide whether to get it or a D90 depending on funds.

Its chunky, but not too big. Bigger than the D40, smaller than the D90. The screen is nice and clear, the tilt is very handy too.

AF is very quick, and the 11 point AF system is excellent. The bonus also being that you can bring grid lines up in the viewfinder.

Movie mode is ok, sound is pretty poor, but image quality is nice. Will probably never use it, but handy just in case!

Image quality is superb, but I am finding it does slightly under compose, something I' sure Nikon willl with updated firmware.

Feels nice in the hand, the added bulk and weight makes it feel much more of a camera than the D40.

I have been using it with the 18-105VR and 35mm f1.8g.

Comes out slightly darker, but shows more detail, I'm not talking a huge difference!

I took the plunge and got mine today after using one for a few days.

D5000, 18-105, 35mm = £864.

£75 cashback from Nikon - £789 all in.

Yeah I could of got a D90, but I wanted the 35mm at the same time and the D5000 does everything I need it to do!

Nicely, I was thinking of getting the D5000 body so I could use it with the lenses I have for the D40 :)

Hasnt this camera been recalled... twice.

We had a recall on them at work with a "minor fault" .. the camera wouldnt turn on.

Then the second time was becaue they didnt complete the repairs properly the first time round?

Small number? We had every single one recalled, and we had over 25 in stock, if every store in the country did that it would have been in the 10's of thousands!

Yep - I'm sure I said that?!

2nd recall was due to the 1st recall - lol - happy days for those unlucky owners!

Just thought - is the D90 the better of the 2 camera's here?

D5000 top features being the pull-out screen and 19 scene modes

What are the extra's with the D90, just an AF in the body?
I couldn't use my current lenses with a D90 then I'm guessing

D90 has...
- built in AF motor.
- Better build quality (imo).
- top mount lcd.
- higher resolution main lcd (than d5k)
- ability to control nikon flashguns wirelessly (commander mode)
- some other stuff that I have missed out.

HTH

ETA: all your (I'm assuming Nikon mount) lenses should work fine with the D90.

Cheers Ribena
The D90 has won its place on the "wish list" then if it will take the lenses I have got for the D40
