Nitrogen Filled Tyres

Saw this advertised in Demon Tweeks when I was there last week.

Race Technology, F1 have been using it for 10 years etc.

Any point in a road car?

Air is 78% nitrogen anyway. 21% oxygen and 1% other gases like carbon dioxide, argon and other trace gases. Nitrogen is used alot on the continent in road tyres (i beleive) and in things like construction vehicles. Its a safety and accuracy thing. Oxygen is able to leak through rubber (very slowly) resulting in underinflation. Nitrogen cannot leak through the tyre rubber. Nitrogen also wont oxidise your wheel rims.

nitrogen is less reactive to temperatur changes and will still pass through the rubber, just alot slower than normal air.

Yes i agree, but it depends on the compounds in the rubber. Natural rubber is permeable to alot of gases, but synthetics can be made almost impermeable to nitrogen and other gases. I beleive military aircraft have expensive rubber compounds that are impermeable to nitrogen.

yes, but rd tyres will still let nitrogen pass through, simply because they are not designed with nitrogen in mind.

Saw that advertised in RSR Tyres in Bromley a few months back and thought "B0!!0x 2 that!" at the time... now uve just confirmed my thoughts :)
