No acceleration

Car  Arctic 182
Taken engine cover and inlet off to clean. Was just putting it back together and when i turn the engine over i have service lights and it idles at 2000rpm but if you press the pedal nothing happens. what have i done wrong? I thought i'd reconnected everything properly. The only thing i couldnt put back on was this, couldnt line it up but its only a cover so doubt its causing those problems:

When you say you press the pedal and nothing happens. Do you mean it just doesn't rev. Didn't knock the throttle cable out did you. Easy mistake
 
could someone send me a picture of the throttle cable so i know which one that is and i'll check that. how do i refit that cover as it wont line back up. and yeah it doesnt rev. sorry if i sound a total n00b
 
Yea undo the mount again and jack the engine up and get that right. The throttle cable is just behind/below the intake pipe

This, jack the engine up to line up the mount and then put the bolts in.

Throttle cable is the one that connects to the back of the throttle which is at the top right of the engine, the airbox feeds it. I'd go around every electrical clip you can see and check it is properly in.
 
Jack the engine up using a jack with a block of wood on the sump. you will cause alot of damage if you drive it like that. and have you put the connector back on the throttle body.

CS gets scarier everyday

Plus you won't have a throttle cable being a 182

Inlet manifold doesn't look right either, don't remember my oil filler being t hat close to it?

I think when throttle cable was mentioned, it was the electrical connection that was being referred to ;)
 
and fwiw the 2000rpm idle plus lights on is limp mode , in case you didn't know .

other than that a little worried as your knowledge (or lack of could cause some serious damage to you or your car ) maybe even a basic haynes manual might help you , or get someone who knows what they are doing to have a look before your next job .
 
Haynes manual on the way and I just wanted to learn. I'm not very mechanically minded when it comes to cars. Perhaps I should have got help first
 
Nothing wrong with trying to learn , the more you understand mechanically the better in my mind . But just for your own sanity and safety get a mate to help out , who understands what they are doing . or ask for advice and post pictures on here before .

Thing is if the op just thought that was a cover, will he be able to fix that mistake properly?

That is your bucking mount, seriously..........scares the s**t out of me to see this.

If you dont know stuff like this, please.....PLEASE get someone to work on your car. Dont take offense, its nothing to be ashamed of but if you thought all was well there you could have seriously jeopardized peoples lives, notably your own fella.

Has to be the throttle connection surely stopping any revs....

When you turn the ignition on (dont start) do you hear the whining coming from under the bonnet?

I found this really funny, no offence intended.

Cars a complicated beasts, if you have not mechanical knowledge and want to learn - then please in future find someone who is willing to show you OR pay someone to do it right.
 
That engine mount holds the engine up, without it you are resting the sump on the subframe, do NOT drive it.

The high idle and total lack of response to the throttle are almost certainly either a duff throttle body or you havent plugged the throttle body back in.
 
I'd suggest you find the propper torque for those bolts mate, you really don't want that rattling off mid flight.

Please actually listen and just ask a friendly member from the area to pop down and bolt it back together. I'd do it in a heartbeat if I were anywhere near.

Make sure it's checked right over to ensure you've missed nothing else.
 
I can only imagine the threads are shagged on the mount bolts now too. Bet they were really hard to get out without the engine being supported

I have an engine I have just built to run in thursday night so if he doesnt mind me turning up at 10pm or so then I'll go and put it back together for him.

The fact it doesnt response to the throttle now though implies that he will need a new throttle body before he can drive it though, unless he has just not plugged it back in, so I might not be able to sort that unless he gets a spare one by then.

will have only damaged the very end couple of threads of the last bolt undone at worse as it will have been supported till then , tap and die should clean it up ok if that is the case but realistically the bolt will probably just retap it ok when it goes back in anyway if the housing is a little damaged.

Im working in london till thursday evening then will be driving back home to taunton, and was planning on taking the mrs RS2'd 172 out to finish running the engine in when I got back (only built it last weekend), so I will just do so driving to your place rather than driving around randomly like I was going to be doing.

Like I said though, if your TB is knackered, I dont have a spare one so you will need to get one. If you have it by thursday I will fit it for you then (its very easy though I can show you what to do if you havent got one by then)

Can the OP take some more pics of the inlet/throttle body/engine bay.

I still have my money on the inlet not being seated correctly at the back
 
The standard of maintainence on some of these cars is shocking !!! no wonder people keep thinking thay are BARGAINS !!! if you dont notice that God knows what other problems its got !! another Bargain MINTER !!!
 
TBH its a bloody good job he has an issue with the throttle, as otherwise he would have "taken it out for a quick testdrive, its only missing a cover so that wont matter" and caused enormous of amounts of damage to it from the engine smashing around in the bay, like for example the brake reservoir sits just behind the engine and could easily have ended up smashed to bits, or just the sump cracking open on the frame and dumping oil on the road etc.

In fact if he has just undone that and literally let the engine drop like a stone as he did it, it might have already done the sump in.

I will look as best I can when I go see him, so lets hope he has decent lighting as sadly it will be dark when I get there.
