No recall by Renault on Clio bonnets!

  CB600FS
Whats your point? People don't open there bonnet on the car for 18 THOUSAND MILES and expect everything to be perfect? Pah.

This same thing happened with the BMC Mini when it first came out and they were recalled within a week of it becoming known.

I think Renault are criminal by not accepting there might be a design fault.

Someone remind me how many Clio's they have sold in north America ?
I bet they would be in court 10 mins after the first incident.

Im waiting for mine to fail. It has has a lot of other faults so why not this.

  Clio 182
I personally have not yet came across a bonnet flyin open yet and thats wid 7 years at renault. As long as the bonnet lock/mechanisms r looked after(WD40 one in a while) these problems wont happen??

oh really? whyever not?

to be quite honest, i think that as its a very small number of incidents over a large number of vehicles they have responded proportionately. a product recall at this stage would cost them dearly for something that seems to be purely down to poor maintenance.

i first heard about this on the watch dog website sounds pretty bad and also my catch is very stiff anyway when opening the bonnet and there is a little bit of rust on the catch woooppppsss!!! think i will wd40 it just to be safe lol

i don't see it as a problem, its a french car afterall
Would be a problem if your bonnet flies up on the outside lane of a motorway.

Believe me I speak from experience, years ago I had a crappy MG Metro, bonnet flew up couldn't see F*** all, luckily I managed to pull over to the hard shoulder safely. I certainly knew how Stevie Wonder felt when he was driving his corvette on that drag strip.

exactly. "when it first came out". we are talking here about 40 odd incidents out of how many thousand cars over six years?!

at the end of the day Renault is a business not a charity, the incident rate would have to be much higher to warrant a product recall.

The problem occurs when people dont close there bonnet's properly and it just closes on the hand release under the tip of the bonnet. If they dropped it from 6 inches and let it close properly on the catch the fault wouldnt happen. Its kinda like saying i forgot to close my car door and i fell out whilst driving along.

Perhaps I am wrong then, but I thought it was only the Mk2 that was prone to this problem.
More than 1000 reported incidents is not a small problem, and as far as I can recall only one reported incident from a member on here.

You guys need to remember we are car enthusiasts, we "play" with our cars, clean them, love them, sleep with them...whatever.

Most Clio owners wouldn't have a clue how to open the bonnet let alone keep it lubricated properly.

I can see the point that people shouldn't have to double check their bonnets are closed, but it doesn't take a lot of time to do that.

Renault are still fannies for not looking into this issue tho

I had the opposite problem, my main bonnet catch seized up and then the cable snapped, took a garage 4 hours to get my bonnet open, they rippled the front of the bonnet in the process....

I was under that impression too, but on watchdog it showed pictures of the phase 1 and phase 2 MK2 models. Im going to clean up my bonnet catch tommorow.

I always thought it was only a mk2 ph1 problem, ph 2 involved as well?
Yes. As far as i know there are more ph2s involved.

Catches effected include these:

I cleaned and WD40'd mine up yesterday

that bonnet catch is pathetic so no wonder it cant hold the bonnet down.

If it was necessary to check and lubricate bonnet catches then it would be shown in the service log as being checked.

simple warning light on the dash to tell you weather or not ur bonnet is closed properly would solve the problem surely?#

tbh they shud of put these on as standard from day1.

If anyone is interested I will work out a way to do that,. Which warning light do you want to illuminate ?

Does the alarm not chirp when you lock it if the bonnet is not closed properly already on the 172/182 ? Must be a simple way of linking a light on the dash onto the bonnet alarm pin.

My car has done well over 100k and is a mk2 ph2 and the bonnet catch has all rusted but I have never had a problem like this.
What part are they saying is failing? One thing I have had a few times is the actually latch on the bottom part sticking open so when you shut it the bonnet does not close properly.
