No reception a valid reason to terminate a phone contract?

  Mito Sportiva 135
Since coming back to Leeds, my phone has no reception in my new place. In fact the only network that does work here is 02.

As I am paying £35 a month for something that is effectively no use to me right now, would that be a valid reason to terminate the contract?! As a student thats a lot of money to me each month, and so frustrating keep missing calls and having to go outside to make calls.

Anyone had problems like this before? Can't continue like this!

No. It's your fault in their eyes and strictly speaking they're correct. The onus is on you to check network signal strength before the end of the 'trial period'.

But I didn't know when I started the contract that 6 months down the line I would be moving somewhere that would have no signal, surely they don't expect you to move on the basis of phone reception, do they?! That seems absolutely crazy. Tempted to just cancel the DD on it if they refuse and see what happens, although sure it would just be my credit rating plummeting!

So I am just expected the pay 12 x £35 = £420 for something that doesn't benefit me then?! If so then I am pretty annoyed to say the least. Does anyone on here work for a phone company at all? :dapprove:

As I said, not their problem. I had that argument with O2, and that's the response I got.

Yeah I will speak to phones 4 u, heard they are good.

I won't accept that its my responsibility as a customer to ensure I have reception, I move around a lot and one of the reasons I chose Orange was because they claim to have the highest network coverage. That is a load of rubbish - I will argue their face off if they argue that. I am their customer, its not like they are doing me a favour, if they cant help my needs then I am getting rid, not paying over £400 for something that doesn't work.

you wont get very far, read the contract your in, and if you cancel the DD dont expect O2 to take you on as a customer, you might struggle to get anything more than PAYG

Most (if not all) networks have a clause in their terms and conditions that says that they do not guarantee network coverage and I know for a fact that Orange do because i used to work for them and people used to complain about it all the time.

You can't go out and buy a game for your PC and then take it back because you've moved out from home and it doesn't work with the one you then use...

I thought about this as well coz I got a new phone and the reception is terrible but as people have said, I got no where when I called customer services!

What do phones4u do then? Is it a case of if you take a new contact with them they will settle with you old provider so that no harm is done?

Sounds too good to be true?

I've done that before. And with DVDs that won't play on certain machines.

I called them and the customer services guy was really cool, advised me to turn 3g connection of and just use normal service. He was very sympathetic with me as he has the same difficulty where he lives, but there isn't a lot you can do.

Its not really like buying a video game at all, because when you buy a game you can objectively check your specification of your computer against a game. When you enter a contract with a phone service provider you can't really check (although the guy I spoke to says I should have some reception here, although they are making a new signal tower in 9-12 months, after I have moved out again, great!!) and when I started the contract I was living elsewhere and the reception if fine.

So, next time you move make sure you check you have phone reception...otherwise you get fucked up the asse and pay for the priviledge. Pretty pissed off really - got 8 more months or missed calls and calling people back

Or... try phones 4 u, they should be able to buy you out of your old contract and start you a new one with o2.

I was with Orange - bunch of traind chimps, the lot of them. Still to find a usefull customer service advisor with them. I've spent probably 12 hours on the phone to them, over the space of a month, all relating to the same problem, and still no joy. Suffice to say, my contract came up for renewal the other week, and when I had a courtesy call to ask if I'd be renewing, I told them politely to read my record of all my calls, and to "go f**k yourselves".

I won't get out of my contract because I now have another phone paid for by someone else...
