Off-side ball joint

  172 MKII FF
I had a 48k service don't not long back and one of the points that was raised was that the off-side ball joint wasn't in ideal condition. Is this something that would cause my MOT to fail in August?

What would I notice with a non-ideal ball joint when driving?

i can pretty much guarantee it will fail on it buddy.... if you put your key in position 2 and wobble the wheel side to side it will usually knock... you will need to buy a complete lower arm as well as its not listed as a seperate part, some companies apparently list a replica part (just the joint) but it doesn't fit the 2.0 even though it doesn't say in the catalog. you might as well as replace both tbh.... ive just bought a joint and lower arm for a 172... think it was about 60 quid including the vat...

You can buy a just ball joint but just buy the whole arm and joint £60ish.

Is their any benefit to buying just the ball-joint over the whole arm? I was quoted about £115 for the lower arm and fitting it - does this sound about right?

Where is the best place to buy one from?

I have a ball joint for sale.

£8 quid and it will be on your door step by the morning.

Excuse my ignorence but what exactly does a ball joint look like? Are they relatively easy to fit?

Is the one you have for sale for a 172 MK2?

Yep, it just won't fit a mk2 ph1 RS.

They are about 3inches tall and 3 inches wide. Basically two rectangular, rounded plates that sit eihter side of a rubber gaitor covering a ball and socket joint.

4 bolts IIRC, 30min job.

And would this sort the problem i've been told about? The driver side one?

Well if the ball joint is buggered, as you say in post 1, then of course this brand new joint will sort it...?

How easy it it to fit? I'm not mechanically minded. How much would (on average) it cost to get done at a garage?

I can't PM you for some reason, have you got an email addy or MSN I can send you payment details too?

It is seriously easy to fit. If you can get a wheel off and undo 4 bolts then you can do it.

Just looked further into it.

I don't think it will fit the RS models.

Try and find out and if so it will be here for you.

Renault only part for the proper one with the arm. Copy cat5 parts if you can find the ring one your looking £10 ish.

Benefit of chnageing the whole thing yes since your repalcing the worn rubber bushes in the arm its just good practice.

£115 is a lot but £60 list price fothe part say an hour to do labour rates £60an hour easy to get that price.

Thats not a Clio one the Clio one has only 2 holes in it wheras that has 4.

I woulnd't DIY fit one though if your that unskilled though can be a pain to chnage. There a guide if you do a search tomtom wrote saying how to change it.

Say 40 mins to an hour a garage would charge.

Thats a bit ooverestimate if there stuck solid as they cna be then it can be a pain cna need to take the whole darn hub off and work it in a vice.
