Oil change time.....

  2003 Clio 172
So yeah, last service I bobbed in the commonly recommended Silkolene/Fuch(k)s 5/40 oil.......nearly shat myself when buying it so that led to me looking for alternatives.

What are everyone's thoughts on Valvoline Engine Oil? In particular, Synpower Fully-Synthetic 5W40 Engine Oil.

Its down to 33 snoopies it ECP and was wondering how it compares to the finest Silkolene?

Cheers

Fuchs Titan Supersyn is what I'm using for £28.92 from opie oils, seems fairly reasonable to me.

Not for 5 litres its not....

Its about 60 (in NI of course, i.e. Opie robs me for delivery so no point.....)

That's what I paid a month or so ago for 5 litres :). Didn't realise you were in NI, surely postage can't be that much more?

Sorry to steal your thread - however.

What is the recommended oil for these tubs then? - Mines due a change and last time I used some millers, is there a better oil for Dephaser care?

Thanks

I've always stuck to premium brand oils and I've never had a problem. Only one to steer clear of is Carlube Tripe R from euro car parts, it gives the engine a nice ticking noise from what the majority of ppl say.

I think I'd go for Elf if I could get it cheap but it's a lot of money if your changing it often.

  Clio 197
here we go again, use the best oil for your budget more important is regular changes. i have never had a problem with triple r, it meets the Renault specification (RN...) so does me fine

Best oil for my budget is chip pan oil......ergo, thats a s**t comment.

Quality of oil should not be dictated by budget, more by driving style.

I rag therefore i pay

i agree with the driving style playing a part, however regular changes are the most important imho

Valvoline oil is very good indeed. I keep that stuff in stock to use in megane 225's and I've used it for years in my own cars in various different grades.

So, to sum up...

If you care: fuchs/silkolene every 6k (motul 300v if you are made of money and are a bit of a JDM brand *****).
If you care, on a budget: ''fully synthetic'' oils that sidestep the legislation.
Not arsed: Semi synthetic
Full on pikey: Tesco oil.

for general information, I use Motrio 5w40 from renault in clio road cars, and valvoline synpower 5w40 in turbo meganes or if someone wants an "upgrade" in a 1*2. Both are A3/B4 rated

  2003 Clio 172
FYI everyone, Valvolene synpower is only 33 quid for those of you on the mainland from ECP with a voucher code. Just enter WEEKEND1 at the checkout and get 20% off oil.

Doesnt help me with a 17 quid delivery charge so I am happy enough even though I spent a fortune.

This is only my second service (both with Silkolene) on a car that I dont know the oil history of so after this ill maybe consider a cheaper alternative that meets the spec

Id make sure you use a genuine oil filter too, my local car shop chucked in a filter for free with some oil - "fujitoyo" was the manufacturer of the filter and it didnt even come with a sump washer. Think I'll be using Renault ones instead somehow!

Of course matey.......my wee service package arrived promptly as usual from NW Performance yesterday.......along with a lambda sensor :D

hang on a minute, what's with this 6k oil change business?
12k or 2 years isn't it?
If you're going to pour liquid money into it, it should hold out for that long......unless you're a "y0!" fanatic or regular track-go-er, of course.

If you go by manufacturers recommendations, you are on crack IMO.

I bet they are based on Gurtrude coasting round at 1500 rpm.

If i was that serious about it id buy something decent (mobil 1 etc) at about £30 for 5 litres, and change that every 6 months..

At the end of the day its a clio??

Unless its a big power forged engine worth £££££ or a turbo then its seems a waste to me.

  Clio 197
This is why I use triple R and change it every 5-6k - £30 all in with filter.

From his last post Jinjur could be using Valvoline Synpower for £33 – good price that 

Fred @ BTM told me 6k or under to keep the dephaser in check. £73 every 6 months isnt going to break the bank?

It is indeed but not for me, ends up at 50 with delivery to NI.

I dont mind 73 every 6 months......I drive the car very hard and dont know how hard a past it has had.

Also, the dephaser wasnt done with the belts so any steps I can take to prevent it becoming an issue will be cheaper in the long run.

True bud, at the end of the day it is a Clio but to fix it, it costs as much as a BMW tbh.

Kinda breaks away from other hot hatches (a ford for example that I would typically run with pish as lubricant) in that respect.

  Clio 1.2 16v
Little bit off topic, but I just had a quick look on eurocarparts and it doesnt actually suggest any 5w40 Fs oils for my car which is a 1.2 16v. I thought this was the correct oil for my car? Quick search and I couldnt find anything, so wondered if the valvoline MAX life 5w40 FS would be alright as this is whats reccomended for a 182. Its also a good price with the weekend1 promo code aswell. Previously I have used Mobil 1 Fs oil 0w40 which is a bit pricey for me.

if you saw how many dephaser pulleys i do every week you'd understand why i recommend oil changes every 6K

is it just general wear and tear, or can the wear be attributed to the driver's mehcanical sympathy at all.

Just wondering. Oh, and I have no idea what the dephaser is... or what it does, so I've no doubt you've got a valid point.

Still ,I've always had mine serviced by the book, it never uses any oil and the stuff that comes out is, so I'm told, "really healthy" too. That was after a 2-year interval

This is all I am going by tbh......

I also dont know how they can assess the quality of the oil coming out of an engine without a laboratory and testing gear.

It is irrelevant what it looks like imo....it can be golden but might have lost the best of its lubrication capability.

And FYI, the dephaser is the single most ball bag failures on these cars and yes, its down to the oil.
