oil change

  FN2 Type R +MK6 Golf

Im doing a quick change on wednesday a.m for peace of mind really. The oils starting to taint and its 16000 miles so what is best for the beast ???

semi or fully sinthetic?

cheers,ian

Mobil 1 works well but is a bit thin, If u can get some ELF stuff give it a try.. its suppose to be top!!

Not sure what reanult recomend but id go 4 full synthetic if i were u, i had to "explicity" tell my local dealer to use it when i took car 4 its last service. :devilish:

Ive used GTX Magnatec b4 in my 172 which seemed ok but most peeps will say its not the best choice.... prob the cheapest tho

  Shhh

Can do ya some OX 26 used in the RB199 aircraft engine...

Got a detergent in so be nice and clean...!

Sorted... Guarenteed to wreck ya engine, even tho it is fully synthetic..

If you change your oil very frequently it doesnt matter if you dont use synthetic oil. Personally i find Mobil 1 too thin (not viscous enough) for the Williams. I use a semi synthtic oil but i change my oil ever 500 miles and dont allow it to get dirty. This isnt as expensive as it seems as i only do a couple of thousand miles a year in my Williams. If you look at the heat ranges and other chemical properties of oil and compare the synthetic and semisynthetic with non-synthetic you find that for most normal modern petrol engines all are appropriate.

I guarantee that a car run on bog standard halfords but changed regularly will be in better shape than a car run on Mobil 1 but only changed less frequently.

depends on your change intervals, and id disagree with that anyways, normal mineral oil breaks down any chance it gets if you give it some heat, and once its done that it cant go back, its buggered, leavin crap inside your engine

go with a fully synthetic if you can afford it, and Mobil 1 0W-40 is very very very close in viscosity once warmed up to 99.9% of 5W-40 or 10W-40 or 15W-40 grade oils.............the only time its thinner is start up when its cold, and thats why it flows very fast and gives you instant protection...

Unless its so thin and it dribbles out of all galleys and the cylinder head, leaves no film on the bores and takes a second or 2 longer to build pressure...........i hear metal against metal.

Choose your oil dependong on operationg temps of the engine and environment. If your oils getting too hot (110-120) then do something about it..........

Ben

Are you saying that is the case with the 0w-40 Mobil 1?

Im up for a 12k service next month and was going to change to Mobil 1, was very happy with it in my pervious car.

Ahh.. another what oil? thread, luv it !

Slick 50 is the way forward..!

Changed every 3-4 months...

Ive heard bad things about Slick50 additives. Doesnt do much, the oil that carries the ptfe is low quality and may even clog up oil filters. The particles themselves are small enough to pass through the filter, but over time it can build up. Loads of research done on these additives and many are not favourable.

no, im just winding brun up......lol
your in your sarcastic mood today, i can tell on MSN !

Mobil 1 in a 172 would be a good choice of oil !

I just used to use normal 10 40 stuff £8 for 5litres, and change it every 3 thousand miles.

As the good man once said, theres no such thing as a bad oil change.

I agree with Jim172cup. In the engines in a normal hot hatch cars you dont need exotic oil. Use bog standard 10 40 and change it regularly. If you buy Mobil 1 or other guaranteed to stick to your engine and reduce friction but cost you a mortgage to buy oils your just wasting money.

Well guys i had the oil done this afternoon by a friend in the business and call me silly but i can feel a difference. There is no difference in performance of course but it just feels smoother and gives a nice clean feel to it.

I went for the synthetic in the end and must say that it runs really well in my 172.

Thanks for all the input

regards ian

I managed to source some carlube triple R,which i believe they use in tvr, lotus and morgan cars.Didnt look too thin and had a nice glow to the colour..

My old oil had just started to tinge a little and i dont like to let it go too dark.

I use Halfords fully synthetic. Just changed it after 3000 miles. The car runs absolutely fine. Used expensive oil in the past and I cant tell a difference. If anything, the Williams felt less tractor like with the Halfords than will big brand oils.
