Oil smells like fuel

  sport 182
Hey all need some advice,

Last night I changed all the fluids on my 182, I noticed that when I smelled the oil cap it smelled a bit like petrol. Is this normal and I just haven't noticed before? Or could it be a indication that something is up?

The car doesn't seem to be suffering with anything at the moment.

Many thanks

The oil will always smell a little "petrolly" particularly if you do a lot of short journeys. But as dan said if its bad a leakdowns a good place to start.

Seen quite a lot recently with dead lambda causing the ECU to throw lots of fuel in at idle (10:1 AFR!)

This would cause fuel in the oil....

Its either got or soon will have worn rings if fuel is getting into the oil.

As if the reason its getting in is massive over fuelling, the borewash will cause ring problems.

So definately something you want to look at sooner rather than later. Would be a shame for a lambda sensor fault ignored to cost you an engine.

Cool sounds like the lambda might be at fault. I have never changed it myself.

I did get the light on a couple of times but haven't had it for a while. I did switch the two around so maybe that might be why.

Would it need both of them being replaced? Or would it pay I get them both replaced?

Cheers

OOps i do'nt think you can change/swap them around ! (I may be wrong) but there was a significant pricedifference between the first and second one when i went to Renault when having probs with my first lambda. First lambda is involved with the AFR which is important for cars' mixture and the second one does'nt read AFR.. it just tells the ECU if the cat is still functioning or not . You could do without the second one just fine without any problems (except light on dash, i can live with that)

Bloody expensive too , this lambda! they charged over 100 euros
