Old New Car

If the following cars were still made as brand new (with warantee, etc), by the manufacturers, would you buy one of these (if so which one) or go for one of the present crop of hot hatches if the prices were similar:

Mk1 Golf GTi

Clio Williams

Valver

Pug 205 GTi

Renault 5 GT Turbo

Fiat Uno turbo

Why doesnt a company buy the rights to one of these cars and remake them? Im sure theyd sell like hot cakes. Retrohatches.com ;)

  Fiat Coupe 20v turbo

5 GTT, not that I could afford a brand new one. Unless they used the original 80s price!

A mint original edition Williams... erm, but dont I already have one? ;)

Would also love a Tungsten Grey GT Turbo and Pearlescent Black Clio 16V.

Ben, you dont get a choice because your car is too shiny. Also youve already owned an as new Valver. Go and stand in the corner and think about us other drivers with are parking dents and stone chips.;)

Just a thought and this mainly applies to the older hot hatches there 205, uno turbo etc..

Are these cars any good when compared to modern day equivalenst (looking at overall package) or are we just looking back through rose tinted specs?

Regards.........

i think youll find that top gear did a test of old and new, the 205gti got beaten by the 206 gti and the escort cossie pissed all over the focus RS, they did 4 others too but cant remember which ones

I dont see performance increasing substantially. Most old school hatches will keep with or out perform modern equivalents. The cars now are less raw and more refined. The area that has improved is possibly safety. But even this is arguable point.

I think you have to remember what a hothatch is. It is a fast version of the normal hatchback equivalent. To be desiravble the original car really has to have some character too. I think the Renault 5, 205, phase 1 clios, etc are all good cars, IN THEIR OWN RIGHT. The original cars now lack character, and this spills over into boring hothatches that also have no soul. The modern cars all look the same. I think this is as a result of too many committees having input during the design stage.

Its a similar situation in formula one. Schumacher should be a real hero, but he isnt. He doesnt have the same kind of following as someone like Jean Alesi, who only won a single race during his career. The reason is that people love emotion. Schumacher shows no genuine emotion, whereas Jean cried, laughed, and in essance was human. I think the older cars have emotion like Alesi. The modern cars are just fast, efficient Schumachers.

that was very deep, and agreeable, but i cant compare anything to Michael Schumacher, he is a t*sser and i really dont like him! but anyhoo, i must agree with the point of the new cars dont have any soul apart from a couple (clio!) i love my clio to bits and i think all cars have their own character, im too young to coment on the character of old hot hatches as the only other car i have had i an E reg Nissan Micra which i still thought had its own personality.

New cars loose their individuality because of mass production. It is very difficult to have a car and not dont see at least 10 others during the day

Jesus Stromba old chap that little passage almost had me in tears! Totally agree with every word. Id have any of them any day over the bluntened modern day pap!!!!

Good reply and I cannot really comment as did not drive older hot hatches. I did have a 1994 v6 mx3, which was almost a cross between a coupe and a hatch! It handled brilliantly and hell............... a v6 rose tinted engine!!!!

Anyone else driven one?
