Opinions? (Harness & Flat Eric Content)

After Mark (Dr Jekyll) told me about the Halfords deal on Sparco harnesses I was very tempted but at the same time put off by using them on standard seats. I imagined it wouldn't look right.

In the end I thought sod it and bought them as I could sell them on if I didn't like them, but I actually think they look quiet good. Much better than expect and I also like the feeling of being held in tight when spirited driving is required!.

Took a few pics... Opinions?.

Thanks matey.

Take apart the bit where the seatbelt plugs into (2 small torx screws). There are two tiny metal contacts, slide a bit of electrical tape between them. Job done.

Not that I'm aware of!. Yeah I fitted them exactly the same as Mark in the end. Bolted to the Iso bar at the back and at the front its bolted to the existing seatbelt mounts as stated in the installation instructions.

Heard mounting angle should ideally be within 20 degree of both the horizontal and lateral points adjacent to where the harnesses meet the seats if that makes sense? Someone correct me if I am wrong on that?!

so is it only "recommended" if you have a rollcage for the 20 degrees. i cant see how you can achieve this any other way?

Yeah so they'd have to be mounted to the top rear seatbelt mounts. That would look even worse!.

Obviously very open to debate and personal opinion as some harness companies appear to imply that they should bolt near the iso bar! With standard seats i'd have to say your current set up looks better Joe :S

Tbh I was unsure about getting them, and the responses have certainly swayed me towards taking them out.

Its like they say... do it properly or don't do it at all.

I'll chuck the money at some new rubber instead!.

I admit they don't look right without buckets, and I am a bit fussy when it comes to things looking/being right so I'll probably chip it off.

As Mark said to me, sometimes you gotta try things out to see if you like them or not.

Yeh, to me they dont look right. I see why you did it though, but na. Also, does it not add extra strain on the seats with obviously that angle. When you brake hard your going to be putting alot of pressure pulling down on the back of the seat ?

The thing that would worry me, is with a standard seatbelt in the event of a roll it will let your body move forward/around - harnesses would hold you tighly and near bolt upright and id hate to think what would happen

Wouldnt be having it myself like that, heard it to be pretty dangerous in an accident having harness' on standard seats for various reasons also.

You have a nasty shunt with the belts like that and I very much doubt you will walk away.... The harness will just slip down either side of the seat leaving you without any protection, not to mention what would happen if the airbag in the seat went off!

Some useful info for you:

1. Standard seat with harnesses doesnt work all that well, you still slip around, & more importantly, the back of the seat isnt designed to take the strain of the harnesses in a crash. Forces are generally strong enough to crush the back of the seat/folding mechanism and youll find yourself flying towards the steering wheel/window/dash/tree.

2. In addition, when using a bucket seat without a harness, the factory belt wont hold you in correctly due to the high sided nature of the seat.

3. Conversely, fit a fixed bucket, harness & no cage and you will sit very tight (without being able to move much). Which means that if you flip it, you´ll get a rather sore head/neck ... purely as you wont be able to duck like in a normal seat/seatbelt.

4. And finally, if you fit a cage without proper bucket seats or fixed harnesses & you will end up with to much body movement. Since you dont always wear a helmet, the likelyhood of cracking your skull in a crash is again, quite great...
