Optimum diameter for exhaust system??

Been told various peoples opinions about what diameter exhaust is best to have on a clio 172 and now not sure who to believe!
Exhaust centre in Cardiff told me that because only a 2.0 car the engine will not produce enough gasses to warrant having anything bigger than 2 inch as it will mess up the flow.
Also been told elsewhere that 2 & 1/4 would be best with a decat and that 2 & 1/2 best with a sports cat.

Anyone got any sensible answers that are not guesses but actual fact??

sub 2.5" is on the small size for the clio, all the smaller systems i've seen have dropped power and been restrictive.

'optimum' depends on many things, but a stock engine, just go for 2.5"

I had a 2" system on my 182. Changed it to 2.5" and definately 'felt' better especially mid range.

Due to extra silencer the 2.5" system was also quieter.

**The two exhausts were a different configuration though so I am not sure how much this effected it**

Exhaust fitters = £200 per week (for life) failed mechanic collage dropouts.

It's not nice to stereotype a particular profession dude, there are bad eggs in all of them.

Anyway, my exhaust fitter knows how to spell College.

I agree - and apologise - just get fed of going back to these places time after time when they should be right in the first place.
