Optimum gear change ?

  Peddled device
What are the optimum engine revs to change gear when trying to extract the maximum 0-100 times from a 182 ? And what revs should you hold before dumping the clutch ? (In the dry of course...on a private tarmac runway ;) )

For max accleration, you want to change up at peak power iirc. 6500rpm according to book figures.

Use the shift light.

It is not as simple as peak power as the lower gear will still give you better acceleration for a few hundred revs after peak power than if you shifted up.

Ditto, that's what it's for after all.

Shift light? Really? It's not a shift light guys!

what do you mean it's not a shift light?

LOL at the shift light again.

You want to change above peak so when the revs drop your still on cam i would of thought?

Thats what i do anyway, brap brap! :race:

To be fare mate, yours isn't standard (can't remember if it's remapped), but the change indicator (shift light ;)) will probably be wrong for your car setup. If that makes sense

haven't timed it (Mark may have done?) but, just from feel, i'd not noticed the benefit in taking it much past 6.5k. you're comparing the acceleration you gain from the waning power/torque/whatever (past 6.5k) with the torque in the next gear (which is stronger imo)

ed. if you wanted to, you could probably see what's what by looking at a power/torque graph, using the mph/1000 in each gear (which are probably both on here somewhere)? is it that simple? presumably drag factors in somewhere as well. dunno

The shift light comes on 300rpm before the limit in that gear, so if your on a track and concentrating on where your going and the position of your car, the shift light lighting up in the bottom of your view is the best thing youve got. 300rpm is just enough time to react and change gear so its not far off a "optimum gear change light".

thats what I was thinking. I guess technically not optimum, but probably the origonal intention.

Of course its a shift light

Its just wrote by Renault in a ''political correct way'' as a optimum gear change light so as not to encourage folk to hash it on the road.

Look at the workings of it, its exactly the same as a shift light so whats the difference apart from the wording? nothing

Look at it another way, you can only really use it legally on the road in the first 2 gears ;)

It's not a shiflt light. A shift light activates at the optimum change point. This activates just before the limiter. You'll go quicker changing up slightly before the light.

Do they both let you know when to change gear? Yes, so its the same thing ;)

If you fit a shift light its up to you to find the optimum

Because you decided its not im presuming? or somebody else did and you followed suit?

I would imagine its a redline warning light, so really a shift light, otherwise it wouldnt be there

Renault have it down as a "Gear change indicator"

Optimum, the best or most favorable point.

Renault call it a optimum gear change light and you set a shift light to light up at a optimum point. Its exactly the same idea just worded different.

The optimum revs to change up is different for each gear. On standard engines power falls away after 6.5k iirc. I love the notion of "it said so in the manual, so it must be true". In the brochure the steering wheel is called leather.

Where it comes in at it totally irrelevant.

The Renault lights up at the optimum. You set a aftermarket shift light to change at your optimum point.

Its exactly the same principle and end result ie, it lights up you change gear

No it doesn't FFS. The optimum point is around 6.5k. I give up.

Doesn't really matter that much where max power is - it's probably faster to change after the 6500 rpm mark since then you wil be closer to max power in the next gear, and a few hundred rpm above 6500 will probably still be producing more power than what the revs drop to if you change gear.

I change gear at around 7100 personally when trying to get a decent 0-100 - (my limiters set to 7500).
