Out of control hazard lights

  Clio 172 Cup
Got a 2002 (52) Clio 172 Cup and after washing it today, the hazard lights came on.
I pressed the button on the dash and they stayed on!
Pulled out the plastic surround, fiddled with the switch and they stayed on! :S
Disconnected the switch from the wires by removing the clip and they stayed on!:dapprove:
Re-connected the switch to the wires and they stayed on!:(
Finally they went off after much pressing of the button!:D
Re-attached the plastic surround and they came back on (without switch being pressed)!
Alarm is working fine, but hazards stay on all the time.
In order to stop the buggers I've had to remove the fuse which leaves me with no indicators, even though the red triangle continues to flash.
I'm wondering if anyone else has had same or similar fault and if so, what they had to do to fix and what sort of cost it came in at.
Cheers for your time

My mate had the same problem on his '03 dynamique, the switches are a bit dodgy, try replacing it.

i have the exact same problem, washed the car today and they came on and can't turn them off, only way i get them off is taking the indicator fuse out and putting it back in when i'm done washing lol.
mines got worse so when it rains really heavy they come on when i turn a corner.

been to reno other day and all they did was fit a new hazard switch but it still seems to be doing it so they said they want it in for a full day as they need to remove all the black plastic between the bonnet and windscreen as it's got something to do with the alarm in there :S.

goood job i bought it not so long ago so they can fix it me for free, otherwise i'd ask another garage to do it. will let you know going to see how it goes when it's raining first before taking it in.

mine arer the opposite and wont turn on. checked the fuse and its not that so i guess i just need a new switch too. are they cheap from renault?

Take the near side scuttle pannel off and look at the alarm unit. That will be wet and is causing the problem 100%. Switches only fail when you cant turn them off and the spring fails inside.

Yep, as above. Dodgey switch. Get down to a scrapy unless you want to pay silly prices from renault!

thanks shepperdspie - took the pannel off today, had a quick look and can see where the damp has got on the unit when i was washing car. seems to be fine now it has dried out - i know to avoid getting that part of the car too wet when washing now!

My indicators on a 2003 1.2 Clio have recently started to give trouble. At first the righthand indicator functioned when closing the driver door window. This fault has now escalated to the righthand indicator coming on at random while driving. I have not yet attempted to address this issue but it will have to rectified asap somehow.

Is it ok now then?
