Pads and discs....

M

Im going to be needing to upgrade, after about 5 miles of "enthusiastic" driving they were smoking and bits of pad stuck to the wheel. These are just standard pads and discs.

It's for my 1.6 so the same brakes as a Williams. Has anyone got a good combo they can recommend?

  LY 182
the 1.6 uses the same brakes as the 1.2 16v in that case then?
if so i'm interesed in this aswell as my standard ones arent up to much

Brembo HCs/Max and DS2500s would be a good start i'd imagine if your going to keep the standard calipers.

Yeah but he's fooking expensive ;)

Was looking at the Brembo Max's as GSF do them....

What kind of a job to upgrade to 172 fronts?! The DS 2500's are good! had them in the cup for ages!

gsf do the max's dirt cheap and they're now local.

sadly they dont do the pagid pads anymore, so might be worth giving tweeks a ring for some ds2500 as mine are minty mint. and it cleans off the wheels which is a bonus

Just need some brackets to space the caliper away from the disc. Otherwise, I'd need hubs, suspension etc etc!

Brainwave.... If I got RS coilovers, could I use RS hubs and brakes or are the driveshaft splines different? Any difference of balljoints? How is the RS widetracked?

Wish i never mentioned anything...... So many questions, but i can do some digging!! Plus i know a kev with some callipers?!

Balljoints are different and the RS is widetracked with just the wishbones iirc. Pretty sure the hubs are interchangeable, although imo they're still not anything amazing good but not amazing. Although i've since been poisened by 4 pots.

Ktecs big brake kit worth a look in?
I got some 1*2 brakes for 99p:D eventually i may get brackets made up.

So, theoretically I could get coils for the RS, RS hubs and brakes, then bolt it all together on the standard wishbone and shaft?

  LY 182
im not 100% convinced on that, as if you think about it lengthening the wishbones alone wont give a wider track it will just give massive negative camber.. therefore the top of the hubs have to be spaced out aswell and as far as i know this is done in the suspension leg bolt alignment on the hubs..

and where you are now wider tracked you need longer shafts.

sooo, if you were to fit just rs hubs you'd be left with massive positive camber and no way of adjustinng out that much camber

in order for that to work you'd need to lean the tops of the hubs in somehow possibly modify the coilovers slot the bolt holes but 1 i wouldnt trust it and 2 i still dont think you'd get enough

put this on my old 1.2 made a noticeably difference from braking at high speeds. however they still suffered from brake fade like normal brakes. so its better value for money to go with good quality pads and discs in the first place.

I glad someone else is on the same way of thinking! Scrap that idea, lol...

Discs and pads it is!

The struts must be different to cancel out the neg camber then? The subframes are the same so it is must be done in the suspension.

yeah, subframes the same, wishbones are longer and bolt alignment on the hubs are differnt ie spaced further towards the back of the hub.

The hubs and suspension alone cant widetrack it surely? If its in the wishbone, Id need wishbones too, if not, Ill be left with wheels touching my wings....

In my mind then to do it you'd need all the load bearing stuff from a 172, front wishbones w/balljoints, hubs, struts. Then you'd be running the same setup as a 1*2?

thats the long and short of it!

i've been trying to figure out a way of doing it for ages,,

i've got 172 hubs, struts, brakes and shafts.. but no wishbones or arb. so short of buying those from matt (which i didnt really want to do as id end up wide track) theres not much of a way round it

Stay away from EBC Greens Dave....if you'll remember from the IOM, they wilted after that first full on attack of the mountain section!

i expect u had some cheap crap like halfords discs and pads, genuine r good enough for a 1.6

i looked into all this a while back..............ended up sacking it off down to the fact that my coilovers wouldnt fit 172 hubs....but if you got 172 coils fair enough....

i was told needed, wishbones, arbs, hubs, shafts, and the only thing people didnt seem sure about was the steering rack.......but fark knows, ended up sacking it off....

i WAS going to machine some copies of the Ktec brackets used on their bigbrake kits......but i dont know if you need different carriers for bigger disks also? because the ktec kit comes with diff carriers?

Halfords normally stock Ferodo which are pretty damn good for the price TBH.

Had problems with calipers seizing up on cars that have been laid up a while so Caliper strip and clean would be high on my to do list. sounds like they could be sticky calipers by the smoke and chunks of pad bit in the first post

Not a bad shout Danny. Brings me to my next point actually, lol.... When I touch the brake pedal, not going to full on brake, just to feather them, the pedal seems to "twang" and I can feel it under my foot. The braking isn't affected though in any way. All the caliper bolts ar tight, the braided line unions are tight and the pads are in correctly.... Any ideas??

The widetrack thing, If I cant do it WITHOUT going widetrack, I wont. The wheels will be touching my wings (See Not normals Clio TT) so its not an option. I'll Just see about either getting brackets made up (HI Jord) Or some Williams 4 pots when I can afford. In the mean time though, I at least need some decent pads!

Might be a plan TBH..... Is the Ktec kit the same size disc as the 172's though?

5mm bigger iirc, 172 280mm? ktec 285mm? not that it would even make a diff?

only thing i dont know about are different carriers needed?

M

Are you using 1.2 calipers on the Ktec disc? Need to find out bolt hole centres for a 172 caliper and the 1.2/6 calipers then I guess......

yes i am.......

i tried doing that remember, i thought one of the holes would remain in the same position, with the other one just extended.........isnt the case though, they are both complete different locatons, and there dosent seem enough room to make a braket thats stepped down due to the size of the mounting area on the 172 caliper, its too big/chunky to get a braket thats the right spacing AND the right distance from the disk

M

I work that out at 480 for the economy with 280mm disc.... Is that right?

Pimpin'.... I need a job now TBH. I'll take shares in your sticker selling? ;)
