Paint 'shelf life'

I bought a bottle of touch up paint that I had mixed a few weeks ago. I was intending on touching in a couple of nicks on the edge of the door but haven't got round to it yet.

How long is it supposed to last? The bottle has its lid on obv, but wondered whether it starts to go thick and horrible when mixed and left?

i asked that exact same question to a paint shop the other day when ordering some touch up paint. their response:

this is a basecoat type paint..official shelf life is 12 months however we have uncollected or old stock
that is 5 to 10 years old and the paint is fine..i think there is more chance of the tin its kept in having a shorter life lol

so there you go :)
