Painting & Refurbing Rims

I know there is a guide to this in the guides section http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=182549 but there are a few things that are unclear. I wanna give this a try myself but really dont have the cash to mess things up lol

1. what is used to clean the rims before painting and in between coats?
2. Do you wet the wet&dry sandpaper before sanding or do you keep it dry?
3. what sort of paints and clearcoats do you use?? Is it the regular spray can stuff that you get at the hardware store or is it special metal alloy type stuff?
4. is the primer a special type of primer or the normal average primer?
5. do you have to bake the wheels once done to set the paint right, or is just leaving them for a few days good enuf?

Here's how i did mine ^^^

1.It needs to be clean and grease free so i used Autoglym engine and machine cleaner , hosed down then make sure its bone dry .

2.Just dip the wet n dry in some soapy water as you go along , no need to soak the paper .

3.Normal spray paint and lacquer .

4.Normal primer

5.Leave to colour coat a good 24 hours in a warm place before you lacquer them . You shouldn't need to wet n dry the colour coat if the finish is smooth .

 

[Final Maxim]

1. to preclean use panel wipe or soapy water, in between coats you dont need to clean, you can tak rag if you have one, otherwise just check that theres no crap in the paint and that its dust free

2. keep wetordry sandpaper wet, dont think ive ever used wetordry paper dry as its too fine and just clogs up very easily and will scratch your primer, so keep it really wet

3.depends what colour youre using. if youre using a basecoat/laquer then just regular paint is fine, i use cellulose laquer. you can get wheel paint that requires no laquer though.

4.just normal primer, either cellulose or 2k. im guessing you'll be using aerosols so youll be using cellulose

5. completely upto you, if you have a hot air gun or hair dryer then after painting, just heat the wheels up for 10 minutes or so, just so that nothing lands in the laquer while its wet, after that just leave them a few days somewhere to cure.
