Painting whole bumper with aerosols.

  Mazda3 2.2D 185BHP
Ok

Have a blue 172 front bumper to replace my broken black one due to a hit and run at works car park.

I plan to paint it using halfords nv676 cans.

Am I correct in thinking the following steps are what I need to do?

1. Sand down original paint with 600 or 800 wet and dry.
2. When sanded to a flat matte surface clean with degrease.
3. When dust is gone apply various coats of black nv676 over a few hours leaving enough time to dry between coats.
4. When last coat is dry, apply 2k clear coat over 3 coats or more if required.

Is that all I need to do? I have a heat source ( like smart repair people uses) if it will help.

I'm expecting to use 3 300 ml cans for the whole bumper, do you agree?

I'm hoping for a decent match to the rest of the paint work.

I'm not holding out much hope for this tbh buddy. I doubt you'll get a great finish using rattle cans on the whole bumper.

The paint on the front bumper of any car takes a real hammering, diy spraying with rattle can lacquer doesn't provide the right protection due to it being soft and not baked dry, the lacquer will chip first time you drive it - you will think why did i waste my time and money :(

Get it done properly pal.

That's an issue, it's all about money at the moment. It's around £40 for paint and 2k lacquer.

I would love to give it to my sisters hubby who paints cars but he wants £100 to do the bumper. If I start spending that much I may as well spend 300 and plastidip the whole thing.

is 2k lacquer not good enough for the bumper?

Yeah use a grey scotch to prep it up not paper, if by 2k you mean laquer that you have to add hardener to then that's better than aerosol laquer, what are using to apply the laquer?

Tbh though mate 100 quid is a very good price for a proper paint job, will be 10000000x better than a rattle can job and you'll be glad you spent the money on it

Ok. Thanks all.
I have asked my sister to get him to contact me. Hopefully he can sort it.

Well, He said he cant do it for me. So I'm back to square one.

I need to Spray the Bumper and Spoiler...

Anyone know of anyone decent around the LE10 / CV08 Area who can do it?

It's not impossible to do it well with cans. However it's all about the prep and all about taking your time. Otherwise it will never look anywhere near right.
Have a read of the thread already mentioned above and see if you think it would be something you can do after reading it.....

Just read the guide. Looks interesting.

I Suppose I could give it a go on my spoiler first which needs doing. And if it works out I will move onto the bumpers.

once down to plastic, use about 2/3 coats of primer, sanding between each one, use 600-1200 going up each coat. paint apply 2/3 coats using 1200-2000. use a high grade paper after last coat of paint and sand until dull. Apply laquer, 2k laquer would work fine, will last you a while before it needs re-doing. Make sure your in a heated eviroment, and that the bumper is warm along with the can. Either soak your can in wamr water for 5-10min before or use a heat gun - dont apply direct heat!

Edit - Take care with your sanding, its all in the prep. Make sure you leave enough time to dry between coats

Thanks!
I will give this a go starting next week.

Oh and if you end up painting it, dont use halfords paint! worst colour match and quality, find a paint specialist around you that will make you a aerosol to match your paint code. Be sure to get their primer and 2k laquer, may cost tad bit more, but end result will be loads better. Round my end its £10 a can.

I know a place that will sort me some paint.
getting dents out of the car next Monday.
£30 a panel :)

It's more than possible to get a good finish with a can. Conditions, time and experience are the most important factors.
As said above, prep is very important. A rule to follow is; if you can feel it you WILL see it. Paint isn't good at hiding blemishes.

If the bumper is original paintwork and in fairly decent condition.
- scotch back the lacquer
- use primer filler and use 800 grit between coats for 2/3 coats
- apply base coat and use 1200 grit between coats for 2/3 coats
- lacquer 2/3 coats
- bake in front of a heater etc for a good few hours.

First coat - lightly dust it on
Second coat - a little heavier
Third coat - get it on!

When spraying outside of a booth a thing to consider is not only present conditions but upcoming conditions. It might be dry and warm now, but is it going to stay the same?

A lacquer I use is HB body 496. It has excellent levelling properties.
If you need any help, PM me.
