panel / direct fit filters

just reading the post about a RRd cup where he chaged the panel filter for an inc of ~4bhp and 4lbft. apart from it being cleaner than the old one, what benefit is there in putting an aftermarket element in there? what is the reasoning behind it?

always wondered ysee.

The reason is you can clean it and put it back in when it gets dirty

The OEM is a replacable part

the reason is that as standard the manufactures use cheap crap so they can make more money for the greedy fat cats

cheap crap elements are cheap and crap, being quite an important part of the engines breathing a decent element is a good idea.

esp as they retain the sealed box not allowing the power sapping effects of a IK.

The manufacturers of these things (Pipercross, K&N, Green etc) claim that their filters will pass more air than standard paper ones too. Hard to tell unless you have a RR in your garage.

Ive got a pipercross panel filter to drop in the 172 at the weekend. Ill be interested to see how that goes. The existing Renault filter has been in for aroung 6.5k miles.

There should be a small increase in power due to the engine being able to breath easier but I doubt Ill notice it.

You wont notice it (I have the same thing). Clean it every 10,000 miles (not 36,000 as Pipercross say!). I really noticed a difference last time I cleaned mine.
