PC building experts - Replace AMD Processor 2700+ with what that will work?

Need to upgrade the processor to something is much much quicker. What is the fastest processor i can stick in it that will work?

If it can support a 3200+, then you're up 400mhz FSB speeds. Assuming that motherboard can support it?

I went from a 2400+ to a 3200+ and noticed a fair amount of improvement - especially when I upped the memory to DDR400 back then as well.

Athlon XP3200+ CPUs are very old hat now though. You'll have difficulty in finding one and what's more, you'll be able to buy a dual core 64-bit CPU for similar money.

Of course, you'll then need a new motherboard, memory, graphics card, etc...

What are the rest of your system specs and why do you want to upgrade?

You'll be hard pushed to source a XP3200 now unless your lucky on ebay, but unless your motherboard and memory support 200MHz front side bus then you'll still be restricted by having 166 bus anyway, with only a relatively small increase in processor speed

For socket A setup the best you can do is a mobile XP2500 which has unlocked multiplier and most of them (with good motherboard and DDR memory) will happily overclock to FSB215 and over 2.4Ghz as you can lower the multiplier in the bios,with memory then running at DDR430, prob need a good aftermarket cpu cooler, if your motherboard and memory support 200 then you could try and source a mobile XP2500 from ebay and takes your chances
