PC's in trouble.... CPU fan error

  Mk2 Golf GTI
Just fitted a new dvd writer in my pc but when i booted up it said:

CPU FAN ERROR! Press F1 to continue

I continued to boot it up and everything else is fine including the dvd drive and a firewire card i fitted but the fan is running dog slow.

I've took the casing off and can visibly see it's running slow, it's also a lot quieter than normal.

Went into BIOS and it's running at 1950rpm. It's as if there's not enough power getting to it now.

I'm not sure what it's supposed to run at, anyone know?

The processor is an AMD Athlon 64 2800 and motherboard is an Asus K8V-X

Anyone got any ideas? Help appreciated as i really need my computer this week!

Is the fan and dvd writer on the same power cable ? Have you tried disconnecting the dvd writer and booting to see if the dvd writer is taking all the power from the fan ?

Thanks for the replies.

I'm on another pc at the moment but i'll check if it's on the same power cable.

The PSU is a 430w jobby, thought it would be powerful enough to run a cd rw and a dvd rw?

I'll have a go at disconnecting the old drive as i don't really need two to be honest, just thought it would be easier for copying discs.

I've just checked the BIOS on this PC and the fan is running at around 2400rpm. An alarm goes off at 1200rpm, presumably a low speed limit or something?

Is there any way to check the temperature of the CPU within windows so that i can monitor it without having to enter the BIOS?

there should be a program on a cd that came with ur mobo that will have some software on. If not try the ASUS website or there is a general one called motherboard monitor (i think).
