PH2 172 powersteering pump pulley ??

  Silver Clio 172 (02)
Sorry if this has been posted before but i have not come across a thread with the same problem im having yet....When i turn the wheels sharp or turn full lock i have a real loud squeek, me and a friend have found the problem and it is because the powersteering pulley is actually stopping and the belt is slipping over it, im not too sure whether the pulley is seized or the belt is no good, just wondering if anyone has come across a problem like this ???And just to add the belt seems tight enough.

on my phase 1 when i turned the steering the belt slipped and i was getting a loud squeaking. i concluded it was the PAS

2 weeks later the car just stopped. turns out the aux belt jumped and moved the timing. result was many damaged valves.

when i pulled the motor out i cut the aux belt off and the crank pulley ( large pulley that can be viewed through the wheel arch on drivers side ) had separated into its 2 parts due to corrosion it is made of 2 parts with a rubber damper between . with water ingress it forced it apart. turns out the outer part was slipping from the inner. only the tension on the belt holding it together

Oh that dont sound good atall :/ well im not actually driving it atm so i have got about 4 or 5 weeks to sort it out before im on the road, im really hoping its either the aux belt tensioner or the pump as fred said, its alot cheaper and i could probably do the work myself, thanks for the replys guys :) :)

it'll be either the aux belt tensioner or the pump is f**ked

+1

Either the belt hasnt got enough grip due to wear and tear on it and the tensioner relaxing with age as the spring gets tired and the thing all seizes up with muck and rot, or it will be that the pump is demanding a load more torque than normal cause its fecked. Either way the effect is the same, the belt cant provide as much grip as the pump is demanding so it slips.

Easy first step would be to just whip on a new Aux belt and tensioner first and see if that sorts it as its not too much money and only an afternoon spannering if you are fairly handy.
If the pump is knackered you can always re-use the new belt and tensioner that you have just fitted anyway its not a cambelt after all. (im sure a load of people on there will say otherwise though, lol)

Oh, one other thing to check for is that seal on the power steering pump at the top, if that leaks onto the belt that will make it slip too!

If You get a small squeak on hot starts also as the car fires it could also be the crank pulley thats what
mine was .
