Phase 1 172 air filter surface area vs phase 2

I thought this may interest some of you guys. I have just measured the surface area of each running right into the corners of each visible filter element.

Phase 1: 866.25 square cm

Phase 2: 312.375 square cm

That means that the phase 1 filter is approximately 2.8 larger in surface area than the phase 2. Why did they change?

I'm assuming that the inlet flow into the phase 2 box will be superior to that of the phase 1 as there are inlets on different sides of the box.

Intersesting. The cup racers used the mk1 box iirc with a simplified route,
