Phase 1 to 182...

Im toying with the idea of selling the phase 1 now as its getting abit long in the tooth, who's gone from a ph1 to a 182 or trophy.
I love driving the ph1 but its getting on, its not perfect, will need 2nd cambelt soon etc and I fancy something newer, tempted by a 182, general consensus is its a downgrade but I want to know from people who have had both, I know its not going to be as raw to drive but is it really that noticeable?

The downgrade business is mostly spouted by ph1 drivers who couldn't afford a ph2.

I could order a Clio 200 if I wanted too, would never have that amount of cash tied up in a car though.

I think it would have to be a trophy or LY 182, the last 182 I drove just seemed abit numb, guess I need to get out in another one.

Lol!

If buying now i would buy a Trophy (they wernt on the market when i was buying) even over an LY unless every creature comfort was important to me and then the LY next if a good Trophy didnt come off! ;)

As i always say those Recaro's are worth a lack of Xenon and other not so important extras alone!

Since when did anyone wet themselfs over a ph2 172?? There regarded as the lemon of the Sporting Clios :rasp:

I'd keep the ph1 or move onto a 172 Cup or 182 Trophy.

The ph2 172 is hardly a lemon.

IMO all of the RS Clio's are great, with the only difference being that some are rawer then others.

I went from Ph1 172 to FF 182.

You'll miss the throttle response, and the fact it feels so raw.

You'll miss little else, despite what the rose-tinted Ph1 owners tell you.

After all this time your still completely defensive lol

In fact all ph1 owners seem to have a complex tbh.

Really?

Wish they were, I'd only get 3.5k for mine realistically!

Seem to be around £4k for a decent one, I don't want something with more miles than the PH1 (68k at present), a 182 can be had for £5k a couple of years newer.

182 everyday.

One of my mates has a Ph1 172 and it's alright, but it feels old (pot kettle I know)

Another has a BG 182 and it's a lovely car to be in for the money imo.

Agree it does feel like an old shed, but despite the driving position its good to drive, I don't want to lose that feel by changing for a 182.

No point in going to a 182. Other than being newer, they offer little else. The trophy however would be an upgrade, loved mine. The only clio i shouldn't of bought was the 182.

I have a ph1 172 and have to say if I could have one I would either just buy a sunflower 172 or a ly 182, something about the yellow, I couldnt just have a more common colour if I was to get one it would definately have to be individual

They're all lovely cars but there isnt much difference in performance from the 172 to 182 so it really is upto you

Ive heard great things about the trophy and I can imagine the kit that comes with them standard will definately provide an entertaining drive :)

Go for a trophy imo :)

i would never go from my ph1 to a 182 as i like the rawness of the ph1 and i like the fact it has no esp or traction control. I only see the clio as a toy now as tbh they are not exactly well built and compared to most more modern cars they are not even that quick, my diesel vectra gives them a good run for the money. And before anyone says i'm chatting s**t i still own the clio so i can compare the two honestly.

i have driven two 182's and both have left me with the same opinion of them.

I would personally go for a 172 cup with decent miles over a 182, they are even more underpowered than 172's.

182 Cup/Cup pack handle much better than the ph1 out the box. Better to look at inside and out. No brainer imho

The whole 'power' thing is entirely moot imho. It's totally luck of the draw whether or not you get a good engine, not which model you buy imho.

Ultimately depends what you look for in a car - I drove 2 ph1 172's before I bought my ph2 and really couldn't tell much difference, save for the fact the suspension felt softer in ph1.

LOL!

It also has a green dash.

Thank christ someone had the common decency to post about that green dash. 31 posts later, but we got there.

Seriously, do people not think its dangerous to look at the dash whilst driving? I kinda a wee bit do

Have to disagree, having owned them all. The 182 grips harder, mainly due to the tyres and stiffer set up, but the ph1 as standard is a better handler. Easier to get the tail out, less understeer. The trophy is just far better than all other rs's though.

Its ugly.

You dont look at the outside or the wheels when you're driving either, doesn't stop you spending money on wheels/cleaning it etc.

  172 - 249bhp @ the wheels
Makes more sense to buy the cheapest (decent) one and spend the difference improving it and having a better drivers car. no matter how much people go on about the Trophy as a Clio benchmark, you can buy a better damper setup at a reasonable price, buy the seats and then you have the same car but not in red. That can only be a good thing?

Less understeer?!!! I can see the tail happy bit - Certainly the ph1 172 might be described as being more fun due to being softer. Maybe a bit more adjustable as a result (I have no idea about that because I didn't push them that hard, and I'm an average driver lol)

I'd bet that a 182 Cup/Cup pack would go round track quicker than a ph1 172.

Now you've done it! uglyredclio.co.uk will be over here en mass any second! lol

Its a daily driver and I do probably 15-20k/ year in it, I want something half decent out the box don't really want to mod it, I ve got a weekend car for that.

All RS owners have a complex lol, ph2 1*2 owners dont let 197 owners call a 197 an upgrade because its big. 197 owners probably wont see the 200 as an upgrade because its the same car but fugly and with an extra 3hp...
