photographing swirls

Wasn't asure if this should be in hear or media or photography, buit as the pics appear on hear I'm after advise on the best way to capture them.

I don't have any fancy SLR, just a Fujifilm FinePix but when I've tried before I never really seem to be able to capture them. Do I take it in direct sunlight, use a ultra bright torch. Some basics would be good as my car has never had a correction detail Since I've had it from new, 5 years, only washed and waxed, best it ever had was a once over with DJ lime prime.

Re: photograpginh swirls

Are you on about in general, or on your LY 182?

I find LY one of the most difficult colours to capture photos of swirls on. It's a VERY good colour at hiding them too, yet still looks stunning (unlike something boring like my Silver car, lol!).

You need an appropriate artificial light source, such as a 3M Sun Gun, Brinkmann or Lenser P7, then just let the camera auto focus on the lights reflection, and you should pick them up. I only use a compact (£200 Panasonic TZ6) and it does a superb job.

Like I say, the colour is the issue I'd imagine. It's a nice problem to have :)

That title...

Anywho it's always going to be difficult on LY but as Russ said artificial light would be best.

Indoors with something like a 3m sun gun or even the brinkman (a lot cheaper) would be best.

Lol, get the brinkman. Des the job perfect even with a 100 pound digi cam, its around 40 pound and lasts a whole car. Someone on here sells them ay his workplace.

I just use an LED torch, you can buy them for about 10 quid. Also you can get some of those floodlight things that are on stands from Tool shops for about 15 quid.

There is no need to go spending a fortune on lighting

Manual focus is your friend for this. Always set the DSLR up on manual, then you can really pick up decent swirl shots and 50:50s.

sorry about the title, was in a hurry to get it posted before I left.

Tried the Cliosport torch just now in average light/ low light and couldn't see anything. Can occasionally see a few when the sun is low and look along a panel but not enough to photograph. will dig out my riding lights as they're fairly bright and try another time. Is it best to take them undercover / inside with low light or in full day light?

I can't see them, but know they are there as you get the odd flash. Also my cleaning method isn't the best so after 5 years I'm contemplating having it done properly.

Also thanks whoever corrected my spelling in the title. lol
