Picked up my 172 yesterday

I got myself a 172 yesterday great car,

the only thing is the water temperature gauge is stuck at the top i can see it moving further round when i use it but wont go back when cool. ive checked the car isnt overheating or anything.
anything simple to fix or would it be new sensor??
