You can see me having a bit of a moment at about halfway through, lol

Unorthodox lines through the corners Chip, was that just to avoid the damp?

flol!! I did exactly the same, at the same point in my ph1!! Bricks were shat as it wasn't my car.

I hate combe in the wet. So so greasy.

Was because the track was greasy as hell combined with the steering on my car was completely knackered mate, you can see it go sideways on the chicane too, so I was having to take lines that meant if it went sideways I had room to catch it, little did I know at the time but my rack bushes were completely screwed, if you see my project thread there is a video showing the amount of movement.
i had an all day pass but after two sessions I just decided it wasn't safe at all as I simply couldn't control the thing properly, at least now I know what's up with it though.

Moment looked like fun! pmsl! Certainly got legs that ph1 turbo!

We were doing around 100mph at that point, was actually quite nervous.
The worst point of the day though was the first bend of my out lap, I nipped past a Leon Cupra r and turned into quarry at what felt to me like a really conservative speed even given the conditions and the thing slid like hell as the steering rack moved when I loaded it up, then when I tried to correct it the rack moved the other way so nothing happened initially then as it ran out of movement it suddenly stopped and transferred the movement to the wheels and snapped back the other way and spun completely.
Will get that video up too to show you what I mean, did a 180 one way followed by a 360 the other.
Normally les trusts me totally in any of our cars but she said that was the first time she's ever been scared I was going to crash, and likewise I thought we were going for the barrier too.
Track was horrifically slippery yesterday, was catching out loads of people, and when you add into the mix my rack problems mine just wasn't really safe at all, that's why I was only just giving it a little squirt here and there like you can see me doing where I pull away from lee a bit coming out of quarry.
Folly really caught me out though, I wasn't even on the power hard at the time it stepped right out in that video.

Sounds like the columns got some play in it? Quite common in the Mk1's, not sure about the mk2, but either way doesn't sound very confidence inspiring!

It's the rack itself moving about mate, it's really obvious if you see the video in my projects thread. Is movin literally a couple of mm!

What was the cart following? ITB's and on R888's by the sound of it :D

EDIT: duh helps if i read the thread title :dead:

I dont recall much oversteer at FCS to be honest mate, certainly not like it was yesterday, little bit doesnt bother me at all (used to rwd cars) but the amount it was doing at folly in the video certainly rattled me!

Just looked at my laptimes from yesterday in the turbo, 1:40 ish, FLOL, I did 1:30 easily in a standard 1.8 16v and did 1:24 in my williams powered one with a passenger, so it shows just how horrific it was yesterday, I wasnt even attempting to get on the racing line as everytime I went left then right it was even worse handling wise (which I now realise was rack movement) so Porkie must have been taking it very steady in the bends to stay behind me.

It was horrible yesterday, i was there in my R27 and on 888's i really was struggling. Was a bit better at about half 3/4 tho, There was a dry line. 1 st track day out of 7 this year i felt scared!! It was just so unpredictable!

I can feel for you there, Chip. Had exactly the same thing with my old hillclimb Mini Cooper. The first time I drove it on fat slicks I couldn't hang on to it, and nearly sh*t myself. Thought well if thats how slicks work I'll stick to road tyres. Did a spanner check in the paddock and found the rack bolts had worked loose! Much better then.

That's the sensible line then. Goes well too.

Normal one with the old mini coppers was the subframe working loose when the subframe mounts started to fail.

Must have been even worse on a hillclimb than a track as so little run off!

Looked like a pro following an amateur. ;) I bet Lee was barely on 3/4 throttle whilst he was following you. That car is nigh on a race car these days.

i really like combe in the wet, if not more than in the dry, to make progress you really need your wits about you, i find it really fun :D

but then again iv been doing combe 4-5 times a year for the last 14 years lol and fhe good old English weather has meant iv probably driven it more wet than dry lol

Lee's is a far better car than mine mate, only advantage mine has is the power difference and since me and mike altered lee's cam timing and remapped it last week even that gap seems to have closed a bit. Goes really well now!
Epic little car, so confidence inspiring, polar opposite of mine yesterday in fact!

I normally like all trackdays in the wet but the one thing you need for it is handling predictability of course.

Yours is perfectly predicatable - if you predict that it will throw you off the track once you come on boost lol

Flol!

Hopefully some new rack bushes will change that. :) thanks for your help identifying the problem.
Still cant believe what a small world it is that a few years ago I mapped your mate who had the ramps clio on itbs. Incestuous little circle the modified car scene!

whoops! Porkie does well there considering power difference. Much better equipped that car though, sounds awesome too ;)

he only got away on the long straight as I kept finding a big bunch of neutrals as you saw in that video coming up around Folly. Was weird... think its a combo of me not having driven the car for ages... and be trying to be kinder to gearbox with slower changes and not actually putting it in gear properly! shame as I would have been much closer and got a much better view of what was a BIG moment!

Was fun, cant wait for a rematch in the dry. Will be alot of fun.

Combe was SOOOOOOO slippery. My Exige snapped sideways on me... in a straight line!

Soooo true mate, when he said you had mapped it I couldn't believe it lol

Yeah was still good fun even despite the issues I was having with mine :)

You can hear the missed gear very clearly on that video, that was only reason it looked like I pulled so much. Good job you did miss it though given what happened with mine on folly, you might have collected me otherwise, lol.

You can just see the power difference on one point, where mine is out accelerating you towards the esses on that video at about 1:37 in. Thats the only place the power difference is visible really, you took quarry a lot faster than me and were gaining on me quite a bit as we came out of it, but then when I got the power down I managed to turn you gaining on me into me pulling away slightly.
Still not a huge amount in it though, your engine is a proper animal for a laggy one, and it makes FAR better use of laying it down thanks to the diff and just generally superior setup and handling.

I dont mind getting matched by an engine that me and Mike built and mapped anyway though so I was pleased how well yours was clearly going rather than dissapointed mine wasnt walking away, lol

Mine was really struggling for traction though so couldnt make much use of the bit of extra power I do have, and my corner speeds were artificially low due to the steering rack problem I had (which left me with no confidence to be on the proper lines), I think that when we are out next the speed difference will be a little more apparent as I'll be able to use the boost more, but I still think that over a lap yours will be at least as quick if not quicker just because of the handling difference, and if its bedford rather than combe I stand no chance just cause you are SO much faster round there than me even in the same car. I still remember how easy it was for you to catch my mk1 when you borrowed helens cup and I think mine was actually slightly quicker than hers on the straights.

I'll order you up half a dozen sessions for the chav day on 8th september and we can have a proper re-match then. :) always makes for good videos with how busy the track is too!

Even with my car working correctly, Ive no doubt at all (as Ive driven lees on a few trakdays and also quite a bit on the road) his handles MUCH better than mine ever will, but with my steering rack doing this on the day:

th_IMG_0269.jpg

The difference was even more between the cars than it should be.

Combe is the one place I should be in with a chance to keep him at bay once its working right as its a track that favours power and its one that we have both been doing for years where as places like bedford he's about about an hour on track there for each minute I have had probably, lol
