a friend of mine did this on his 172 and a couple of other cars and the guys said the car definitely pulls better after. not sure about the head porting thing, is there any risk in doing this beside the inlets?
he also ported the exhaust manifold. I know for sure the cars go better but is it safe in the long run?
thx!

I'd say on the inlet side, your better off making sure its just perfectly port matched, i wouldnt worry about enlarging. Smaller port, higher charge velocities, more torque.

Im interested about the exhaust side, as there is obviously room for improvement, im in the same position but i dont think i can be bothered to do any work to it.

I "think" there is no point in doing the exhaust side as it effects back pressure it's been covered before

PH1 172's & early PH2 172's run larger exhaust ports than the later PH2 172 & 182

From the pictures it looks pretty ghetto but they may just be bad angles from your pics

it's more about "pulsing" , or so i have read and heard . This is why you should never smoothe out the work your doing. Have a look at the oem work, looks like they took a chivel to it. For a reason that is.
