its onboard sound nvidia nforce chipset i think

Ah, could it be an nForce 2 chipset? The standard audio drivers that come as part of the nForce package work fine - even on the latest stuff. I think it's version 5.10 dating back to the tail-end of 2004.

However, they did release an additional audio update on nVidia's website for the nForce 2 chipsets. When I tried it with my MSI mobo, it went a little apeshit. I do remember crackling sounds as being a major issue at the time.

Everytime I've reformatted the PC since, I've just stuck with the audio drivers that come with the 5.10 package alone.
