Put my amateur welding skills to the test and fitted my fittings from 'Torques' yesterday onto the rocker:

a1e63f11.jpg

Pretty unique setup for an 8v engine but allows me to run a braided hose to a catch tank mounted to the right of the bay where the battery would sit. Using all black aeroquip fittings and braided hoses in the car.
As some of you may already know, come the end of September, the Saxo will be SORN for a little bit, just so i can do some major mod's and gather money for the conversion. A quick list of what ill be doing:

Cutting bonnet and boot inner skin's skin and fitting Aerocatches.
Polycarb rear windows
Shot blast and spray the interior myself
Trailer the car to Atspeed for engine fitting, wiring and mapping when i buy the last of the bits.
I've got a spare set of suspension that will be set off to powder-coating to fit at a later date, dont want a loud colour but not black either, Thinking of a smooth Grey colour, opinoins?
Overhaul the rear beam with bigger oilite pins and 24mm ARB

Ill put it back on the road for the drive home from Atspeed's workshop hopefully. Then its a matter of time before i start to strip and shot blast and spray the engine bay

Lots to do :D

Over the last week I got bored:

For those who dont know, many moons ago when the car was stripped i aerosol sprayed the interior black.
I dont want the 2pack paint im using to react so im stripping and sanding it all off and getting red of any imperfections. Im spraying the paint myself the same colour as the outside. Hopefully going to look good.

Got my paint through for the interior today. Was sceptical as to whether it would turn out to be the right colour as its a rare shade and was sent out within 24 hours. But turns out to be bang on;

Just need a better respirator now as two pack paint can be quite horrid stuff.

Little update as of late.

As we all know Trax has been and gone. Really good show and i enjoyed it alot. I won Saxperience Show & Shine runner up, so im mega chuffed with that. Alot of respect for Lea and the GTI taking first, really think it would give Simon a run for his money if they both competed.

A few of mine at Trax:

It's been a while since i had a go with an SLR camera, since mine is broken and i haven't been bothered to fix it. I borrowed a friends camera for a quick picture session to show what it's looking like currently, enjoy people.....

Looks great Sam. Interior looks really clean now colour coded.

How's the engine coming along?

Thanks mate.
Engine is looking good now. All painted and got some nice bits for it. Just need and ecu, gearbox and flywheel and it'll be in

Lightweight pulleys here today from Atspeed. Great quality, and awesome weight saving.

The weight difference:
3lb 7oz before, 10oz now!

Only issue is the alternator belt is too small, but i think its because the alternator set up is a 16v one. No issues though as the guys at Atspeed are swapping it over to my current 8v setup.

And another purchase:

Spoox Carbon Pulley cover, & Atspeed Racing flywheel. I got the late type flywheel with equal bolt spacing on Colins advice as i haven't got a clutch yet and these flywheels are a slight bit stronger.

Good news is i got a promotion at work!!

Once xmas is out the way i can get this thing done. More annoyed that it isnt done than excited now.

Had a look under the ecu and fuse box today, turns out the ecu side is rotten and need a good welding and while the other side is ok, under the headlight it isnt quite straight (bad repair job many years ago) it's all ok but now i have the chance to get the engine out it's worth sorting.

So i have just emailed Atspeed about sorting the inner arches and spraying the whole bay, as well as all the other bits! Do it once do it right etc.

Congrats on the promotion. Looking forward to seeing all your efforts.

We'll have to have a winter meet

  Mk2 Escort
Thanks Fletch, was good to sit and chat yesterday. Will hopefully be a capable little thing, will be interesting to see how much faster it is against a standard 172.

Thanks for the comments Paul, Tim needs to get a meet sorted soon, i am in need of a doughnut.

Seeing your car reminds me of how much I want a saxo!
Looks like a very good one you've got there it looks mint, I like that colour too.
I think I definately want a saxo next when I can save for one, are they quite reliable, etc. ?

Mine has been very reliable. Only ever broke down once and that was a flat battery (it was old and not exactly the cars fault) . Just got to watch for rot on the boot floor, and inner arches but any mk2 will be fine due to a full galvinsed chassis (mk1's were galvinised too but are getting on now). Handling is fantastic out the packet, tail happy when you want it :)

CD10B2D3-BAEE-4ED3-910D-7F518D8C0626-1790-0000032A5CE9A2EF.jpg

New VTS Radiator
Service items ; Dipstick (lol, as old one is broken), New style oil cap, cam belt, tensioner, oil filter. Just need a water pump now.
Odyssey Battery

Not alot but stuff that will really help get this engine in soon. Need to sort a catch tank and bracket out. Then off to Atspeed with a new gearbox.

So close now!

Got the battery in and wired today. Quite a simple job when you have all the bits. Not 100% on the cable routing yet, needs p-cliping down at the back still. Was great to start it up again, have not had it running for over 2 months! It's now back on all 4 Speedlines and sitting on the ground rather than axle stands. Forget how low it is.
Teaser pic for now;

Just read entire thread, Great car and great effort put into this!
Never seen that colour either! very very nice! since you've had the trumpets and the lightened stuff and stripped, you had time to go on a dyno at all?

Looks good Sam, its on my list as well.

Good man, easy enough to do aswell

Thanks i appreciate the comments. The car has never seen the dyno, i see no point with the standard engine still in. The itb'd engine will be in soon and that made 157bhp when it was last running so i hope to hit that again.

Bet its great motivation starting it up again. Id be lost without mine for a week let alone couple months. But guess the end plan is well worth it. Looking forward to seeing it again.

Sounded good, even if it was just the standard lump still. Been 4 months without driving it now, yes the engine in the garage does keep me going lol
