Project S13

  Mustang, S13, AX GT
I'd love one if it ever does ;)

So about the car... Those of you who once followed the thread will remember that I had a tendency to do everything the wrong way 1st time round, live with it until it failed then try again..

Well the last time I had the car running the turbo blew and chucked some of its internals down the exhaust. I took this as a sign I need to upgrade the turbo and got a T28 turbo off of SXOC. The T28 is off of the later S14 with the SR20 engine so it'll run more boost and allow me to go up to stage 3 if I want.

I took the car to a local garage to do the turbo swap along with a set of instructions off of the SXOC so that their mechanic could get it plumbed in, and this is where my nightmare truly started. The mechanic at Wellington Garage in Bolton was seemingly completely incompetent and took atleast 2-3 weeks to get started with it. When he tried to get it sorted after me chasing it up he advised me I had given him the wrong turbo and he'd had to move and bend this and that to fit it.

I complained it wasn't done right and he went off sick for 2 weeks. This led to me having a royal rant at the manager there and he sent my car to another garage to complete the work as this place 'new their stuff' and he sent the car there before ringing me and telling pay I would have to pay garage no.2

Several shouty phone calls later I drove to Wellington Garage and told the chap there I would pay the price originally agreed to him, and he can get my car back finished and any problems paying the third party were his problem not mine I hadn't sent my car there. Reluctantly he accepted this and I got the car back, turbo fitted and paid my money.

I drove the car home, and noticed it wasn't boosting right at all. I tried to take it back but as it had been between several mechanics, the original mechanic still being off sick no-one could tell me what was wrong. So I gave up and brought the car home then SORN'd it and it has sat in this way since 2009.

As you can see over the past few pages, I couldn't decide what to do with it and wanted to do something stupid but never had the money.

Anyway in November last year a CA18 came up on SXOC, low miles freshly serviced with new injectors plugs etc etc at a reasonable price so I bought it, got it sent to Chorley Street Garage and asked Geoff to fit the engine and the stage 2 parts I have collected over the past couple of years.

He agreed, gave me a price and the car went there in late December. There was no rush for this work to be done as I had no intention of getting it road worthy just yet.

Time went on on Geoff gave me a few updates and then finally mid February the engine was in, Geoff had also been kind enough to put an MOT test to the car to see how far away from road worthy the car was.

The fail sheet came back, it needed some welding and a handbrake cable and that was it!!! I was shocked tbh.

So, I asked Chorley Street to weld it up, fit me the cable and get it passed. They did and I collected the car 2 weeks all up and running and with a fresh MOT.

After finally driving it a ways over to Bradford sadly it still wasn't running right and the boost was spiking over 20PSI and then it back fired and wouldn't shift. I took it back to Chorley and Geoff told me he doesn't know his way around 200SX's and has fitted all the parts. He didn't know how to set it up!

I had just received a stage 2 chip off of Horsham Developments and a member of SXOC kindly agreed to fit this for me. So I parked the car up and took the ECU out and gave it away. A week later I picked up the ECU with the chip.

The car was running a LOT nicer with the stage 2 but still didn't want to boost and still spiked so I rang Graham at DCMS last week and dropped the car off thursday night for him to look at and I could pick it up today.

Graham rang me at 8.30 yesterday morning, after only having looked at the car in the previous half hour to tell me that he had found the problem and sorted it out and the car was now running perfectly fine and holding 5 PSi actuator pressure to the redline. DCMS are f**king good haha!

I picked the car up this morning and he told me how to fit the MBC I have so I have brought the car home and fitted that this afternoon. I need a quiet industrial estate so I can turn the boost up to 15psi and the car is then done and happily running stage 2 :)

I am going to do this this week and then book it in for a power run on a dyno to make sure its all running ok and to see how accurate H-Devs claims of 260-280hp are!

Coming up... I need to finish stripping out the interior and get all of that awful sound deadening out
I want to lower it and get some better wheels
I want to strip the previous crappy paint job off, and give it a new crappy paint job :clown:

I'll try and get regular updates in here as per, and this weekend will try and get some pictures of the current state of, well, everything however its a busy weekend and I might not get chance

Cheers Dave. I could never scrap it and wouldn't have been able to sell it. I cant really explain why but i've never enjoyed owning any other car quite like i love owning this one :s

I just dont trust chopped springs jamie. Lowering springs are under £100 its not worth the risk. 1st up will probably be them, then a new crappy paint job, including giving my bonnet to an artistic mate who's said he'll do something fun with it and then will come wheels. In all of this i need to sort out the interior and start buying some more bits for stage 3 :D

Awesome project mate. Surprised you gave it to such normal garages though. They're quite specialist cars imo.

If diagnostics don't tell mechanics what's wrong they haven't a clue.

It was 2009 mate yeah, before you got the panzer IIRC? And yeah it won an award off of Tom haha, services to engineering or something equally ridiculous!

Chorley Street have a lot of experience with fords, but it seems that about it. They can do just about anything with a cossie engine but certainly dont know much about the 200s. Given how good DCMS were and how cheap he is for a specialist I think I'll stick to taking it there in future.

As with everything on this project, I put the boost controller in yesterday and went to test it, only it wasn't holding boost it was spiking again so I binned it and have collected an Apex MBC today. Its fitted and when I get a chance I'll go out and see if its holding steady boost and get it set to the required 15psi :) Pics WILL follow eventually I promise haha

As promised, some photo's... You'll notice that its been neglected for many many years haha. Lets start with the new heart though, new CA18DET with FMIC, T28, Apex'i Induction Kit, Apex Boost Controller, Apex cat back exhaust and a stage 2 chip:

Its still a work in motion, first of all the car was spiking as previously stated. A quick trip to DCMS and he noticed the the actuator was connected correct so he hooked up some vacuum hosing and problem solved. He also told me to disconnect the vacuum hosing and then I can add in a boost controller and feed it to the actuator. 1st time round it was a £15 boost controller off of ebay, this was spiking so I went to Apex in Bradford and grabbed one of their boost valves. When I got home it was scratched and looked like it had previously been fitted however if it worked ok then this wouldn't matter... I fitted this last weekend and went to try and set the boost up in the week when the intercooler pipe on the hot side decided to blow loose. In retrospect this explains the ticking noise and possibly the boost spike...

I have reconnected the boost pipes today but now the boost gauge isn't reading so I think the boost valve might be used and returned to them as it is connected according to the instructions, great. I'll give them a ring tomorrow. Getting this thing running right at stage 2 is becoming a right ball ache!

The interior... well I used it as a storage bin for crap and also took the gear knob for my celica and the radio out for another car etc. As a result it looks a bit like this

Boost gauge is only placed for the time being, I keep on disconnecting and reconnecting to make sure its not me putting it in wrong that stops it from working :S

And then theres the outside, the paint (although it was never 'good') is fcuked. There are extra blobs of paint here and there and missing bits of paint and plenty of moss dirt and general crap too

Nice to see apex are still c***s then lol, as for the Bren device you can make one for about 5-10 quid, however I would pick up a project for 40-60 quid bang that on and have proper control over the boost lol, or stick an adjustable actuator on it,or if you feel like being a complete pikey, forget the boost controller from apex, get a couple washers, remove the actuator and pack out between the actuator and the mount, use longer bolts to bolt it back on, 2mm washers iirc made about 2-3 psi difference

Naith if it runs I aint touching it haha!!

I dont want to go Nato Green, I genuinely dont like the colour I'd rather go satin black or may even try and get it back to the original colour although I highly doubt it.

I think that I might have had the problems with the controller due to the vac pipes not being connected very well they popped right off when I went to remove it so I've forced them on much better now. Just waiting for the snow to stop and I can run it out and see if it holds boost or not. I've email Apex and it wont read vac due to the design of the valve so hopefully it was just me being dumb...

Hey guys sorry for the lack of updates, basically i got the boost controller fitted but mustve knocked the AFM when i did it. I literally drove down my estate and then back again with it unplugged and it cut out and flooded.

I tried to change the spark plugs and dry 'em out a bit but cylinder 4 was cross threaded so i got it towed to a local garage to put back together. Once there he noticed it werent running well and did a compression test, he said compression was low on 1-3 and on cylinder 4 no compression so ive had the car towed to DCMS in Burnley to check out however graham there is pretty busy so its just sitting around until he's free to look.

However, in other news, I've just bought an e46 coupe so atleast i still have RWD while the S13s being fixed up :)

The engine might need the head stripping down and building back up again. the no.4 spark plug shattered so some of the ceramic might have dropped down, if its managed to find its way into the bottom end its a full rebuild but thats really unlikely :(

I'll get a thread up for the BM this weekend when I pick it up :)

Head gasket failure :banghead::cry: DCMS are going to strip the head down and ring me with what else has broke at some point. I wont give up this thing will work again!!!

So... The cars still at DCMS. His engine builder was apparently swamped and finally can get around to my CA18 now he's finished the supra they had. I was contemplating re-shelling the engine for a 'nice' s13, but appreciation has happened and nice ones are well expensive. I guess I'll just have to try and make mine nice then (I am getting older...)

In anticipation of my finally professionally rebuilt engine. I have some bits. The next update will involve tears and hopefully be less than 3 years away, although its out of my hands and as you can see speed of work is an issue.

My god. I just read the thread from start to finish. I don't think I have ever felt so much rage reading a thread on here.

Anyways, was it MSL in Radcliffe?

Well it's good to see someone else who's project is just as slow as my own.

good luck with the rebuild buddy :up:

It was welded... Once. The boxes certainly have some nice bits in :) should be looking at a decent power hike when done.

I think it might have been MSL, near close park? It was a while ago now haha. My memory is hazy.

Cheers guys, hopefully with the time taken it'll come back reliable #dreams
