PS3 Bluray playback settings on a 1080i tv?

So the PS3 shows as 1080p input when playing a Blu Ray although my TV is only 1080i.

It has a 1080p processing chip or some fangled thing... so i assume that it takes the 1080p input and scales it to 1080i... but would i be better off setting the PS3 (if possible) to just output at 1080i and not have to faff about scaling?

Hmmmm

lol Cheers.

Thinking about it should I then put PS3 game input to 720p too? as no PS3 games are 1080 anyway...? grrr lol

it's not a big issue mate tbh, 1080p as you say will only be for blu-ray. 720p still looks awesome, when you go into display settings choose 720p and everything will run at that automatically, looks better than 1080i.

unless i'm mistaken the 1080p pricessing thing will just mean it can downscale it 'well'...

Ahhh cool. ok will have a gander tonight then...
Currently if i put a normal dvd in it upscales it and says 1080i Input...
if i put in a Blu ray the tv says 1080p...
If I play a game it says 1080i or 720p... i can;t remember now i think of it..

1080i is the same resolution as 1080p no down scaling is done only set it to 1080p/i if you screen has a resolution of 1920x1080 if its 1366x766 choose 720p
if its 1024x768 choose 720p (unless the ps3 allows you to set that resolution)

yeah it's lying! i looked up your model just now and natively, it's got a 720p resolution. so set everything to that. when you change your main display setting ont he ps3 to 720p everything will run at that and look nice and cripsy :)

EDIT. weird, some sites say your res is 1024x768 others says it's full 1080p res. You need to find out your native resolution really...

EDIT AGAIN: nah it's defo 1024x768 - so set it to 720p as i said!

So why do tv's bother saying 1080i? if its better to have 720p..?
So its better to just play 720p than to play 720p up to 1080i?
ORRRR is it better to play 1080P scaled down to 1080i? lol!!! arrrrgh.

Looks pretty crispy as it is though... so it'll be better?
I don't get any juddering etc.

1080p and 1080i are the same resolution and to all intents and purposes are the same

its all down to marketing really
you want the setting thats the best match for your screens native resolution no matter what it is

nah i checked your specs, 720p will defo look the best your telly can produce.

cheers guys.. will have a gander tonight... Just always assumed (as you would) that the higher you can get your tv to play at the better it would be.
The fact that it said all that 1080 processing crap really gets ya thinking lol. looking forward to seeing if its better tonight cos its already fucken A :D

avforums boys have said the following...

Leave it at 1080p, Blu Ray through the PS 3 ouput is native 1080P, the TV accepts that signal and scales to fit the screen.

Otherwise you are getting the Blu Ray to scale the 1080p to 720p and then the TV has to scale it to 768p. The less scaling the better.

Yeah, PS3 shouldn't be outputting at anything other than 1080p/24fps for Blu-Ray

I know what you guys are saying now though... If a game plays at 720p and my tv is 720p i should have it that way so its native, instead of upscaling it to 1080i which is unnecessary scaling.

As for non HD movies, that should also be 720p as it will upscale to 720p then play it at it.... where as if i upscale it to 1080 the tv then scales it to fit the tv.. so am i right in thinking thats two sets of scaling thats not needed? lol

Bluray are played in 1080p and the tv downscales to 720p or is it 1080i? dunno either way its downscaling... Bit if it outputs at 720p surely the player is scaling it down as native bluray is 1080p? so either way its being scaled?

Pmsl... confused.

interesting. does make sense, but on my telly which is the same as your situ, 1024x768 native res, 720p looks best

From your PS3?
Are HD Dvd’s played at a native 1080p? so playing a bluray at 720p is downscaling it…?

ok the latest is...... and it makes sense to me...

"There is scaling. It's 1080p on the Blu-Ray itself, so you have to scale that to 720p out of the Blu-Ray player. Then the panel has to further scale that 1280x720 signal to 1024x768 (native res). This equals two scales. Also, 720p output from a Blu-Ray player will be at 60fps rather than 24. Again, 24 is the format it is recorded in on the disc and, since 60 does not divide exactly into 24, you end up with a juddery image.

The PX80 has the ability to receive the signal in 1080p and at 24fps from the Blu-Ray player exactly as it was originally recorded on the disc. It then performs all scaling in one fell swoop, whilst retaining the smoothness of the 24fps.

When I said it's the only way to do it, I didn't mean you couldn't set it up other ways, but there is absolutely no advantage to do so in any respect at all whatsoever.

nice so there is some benefit to that bit of tech they marketed you with! go for it then mate, i think my £350 joby won't be the same tbh, i'm leaving it on 720p as i've done a lot of my own comparisions with people round and stuff and we all came up with the same answers.

i found best way was to look at 1080p ghostrider trailer in different modes. also good to look at divx's as at 1080 they look well s**t scaled.

Sat like a norbert much to the amusement of my missus last night... trying out 720p, 1080i and 1080p settings on GT5P...
1080P input is deffo the best... 1080i has a flicker, 720 shows crowds heads slightly distorted, 1080p is spot on... Sweet!
