PS3 Resaloution help

Finally got somthing to display on my monitor, and yea it looks awfull. 1080i gives me a blank screen, 1080p actually works but gives crazy colours (So i suppose it doesn't work...) Obviously, as my monitor is only 1680x1050. Now can you set custom resaloutions for PS3?

Blank screen, i think. I cant actually see what im selecting as it says "Out of range" in the middle of my monitor :X

"out of range" errors happen when the monitor is incapable of displaying the resolution that is being sent to it.

You monitor is incapable of displaying 1080i or p resolutions as this is 1920*1024 while your monitor is 1680*1050, so it just isn't wide enough.

720p is 1280*720, so in theory your monitor should be able to display it, but it's possible that you have no decent scaling circuitry in your monitor, so it only accepts secific input resolutions below its native resolutions and is unable to scale any others.

I think you're confused on several things.

Firstly "out of range" refers to the refresh rate not the resolution.

Secondly it's 1920*1080 not 1920*1024.

Thirdly 1080p (Same as 720p, 480i etc etc) refers to the vertical amount of pixels (aka scan lines) not width.

Griff is right, i was reading your post with a baffled face.

Just got it working with 720... couldn't see what i was selecting before due to the out of range. Anyway, thats all gone and its running at 720 - which isn't actually that bad. Blu-ray are nowt special on this tho. May still go ahead and buy a 24" monitor.

Why would i get another Xbox? Then i would have 2.

Oh yea it was automatic, trying to force 1080i. Using DVI to connect it.

yeah, i fucked up there

Not quite sure where the 1024 came from, while the 1080 in 1080p does refer to the vertical resolution, it also infers the horizontal resolution.

"out of range" is not refresh only, it also occurs with resolutions as well, it's basically a generic complaint that the monitor cannot deal with the input signal.
