I signed up a while ago, but never used the forums. I'm posting with regards to a dilemma I have.
Basically I've had two cars, both Clio's - the first was a T-reg 1.2 clio with 308,000 miles on it (haha, believe it or not - it was my Grandad's) - the second was a 1.6 16v clio which I bought about 3 years ago. (Which was surprisingly nippy) Both were pleasant to drive, though not without their faults. Unfortunately, my latest clio was written off. I have always wanted a clio sport and now seems like the perfect time to get one. Having owned two previous mk2 clio's I am familiar with the driving dynamics and their problems (lol).but for all their faults I still love them.
I have a budget of about £5,500 and was considering buying a 197. There are cars that are "more sensible" but when I Weigh up everything the 197 ticks all the boxes.
However, I was writing to ask whether a 197 would be worth the money over a 182. Like I said I have always wanted a clio sport. However, I am a full time student with a part time job and a limited budget. Basically - I want a car that's relatively cheap to run, good to drive, good for possibly the odd track day (when I can afford) and reliable. I know it's a lot to ask and having owned a few clio's I know there will be the odd thing that goes wrong from time to time. However with this next car I'd like to get a car that doesn't give me too many problems.
Having spoke to a good friend of mine (who is a renault specialist) he said I should stump up the bit extra for a 197 if I can, as they should give me less problems and they're a nicer place to be day to day. He also says the chassis is sublime. On the flip side my brothers had a a few 172s: one cup, which was awesome and a few cheapies which gave him problems. So I know there are good 1*2s out there.
Oh one last thing I have calculated my annual mileage to be around 15,000, including commuting to uni. So the car would be subjected to this sort of mileage (quite a bit on the motorway).
