PX offered, 197 for mk1 V6, advice needed

Hi chaps,

I've had my Mk1 Illiad Blue V6 clio up for sale now for a few months due to having a baby and needing something more practical. Its now priced at what i would think is a very reasonable price at 10.5k. I've had a few bites but nothing concrete and some daft PX offers!!

My advert here...

Today I've had an offer of a Part Exchange for a clio 197, details as follows:

My car is a 2007 56 plate Clio Renaultsport 197. It is metallic albi blue and has the usual spec of keyless entry etc and nealy all the options, xenon headlights with conering lamps, electric folding wing mirrors, extra tinted rear windows, cabasse stereo and changer, climate control and auto headlights / wipers. It has full service history, the first is renault and the second was a specialist at 23k in July 2008 (genuine parts used). The milage is currently at 26k and still has 12 months warrenty and is taxed until July 2009.

And i'm told that the car is in really good condition!

The plate is not included in the sale.

So the reason for this post is I really don't know what 197's are worth? and also I really wanted a more practical car to replace the Vee i.e. a megane 225 or laguna sports tourer! However the 197 may be a compromise?

The 197's owner values the car at £9k - £9.5k and will offer me his car and £500 for my vee.

The wife has a 182 and tbh using it everyday on short trips its not that much better than the Vee on fuel, 30mpg v's 26mpg. And at least I know the Vee is a genuine car and is well looked after?

Just thought I'd ask your opinions?!?

Cheers Ashy.

You say you want something more practical then the vee, the 197 is that (it has back seats!!). But if your hearts set on a Megane, hold out for that.

Saying that though, the deal doesn't sound too bad to me. You're going to struggle to shift the vee in the current economic climate. If I was after a vee, it would have to be a phase 2 which I'd imagine is what most would want.

Looking at it that way, I'd probably take the deal.

Get him to part with the plate too if he wont give you any more cash.

It wont be any more practicle than a 182 tbh. Might as well keep the wee.

Plates meaningless to me, I could just put my C110 Plate on it I suppose?

What are 197's like on fuel? Better or worse than a 182?

Considerably worse im lead to understand. That however isnt through personal experience i must stress purely from what ive read on here and the Renaultsport forums

I'd say his was worth a bit less too tbh. Then again, as has been said, you might struggle to shift your mk1 vee for a decent price anytime soon.

I would be tempted.

Looks lovely that 197 in those photos, good spec too. I'd be tempted, but I'd want £1000 plus his car to do the deal.

megane DCI sport for practicality.

go well aswell

If i sold the Vee for Cash this is what I'd go for, the 175 lux look great!!

Sounds like what you are saying is in terms of practicality i'll gain a boot and back seats but not a massive amount of extra space and MPG wise its going to be similar to the Vee. Might be some small savings on insurance and maintenance?

Only thing that concerns me is I understand the current economic climate isn't in my favour but once we come out the other end I would think the Vee prices would be stronger than 197 prices? Quite when that'll be who knows!

Plus I love my Vee and don't want to get rid of it for peanuts!

Whats the interor options in the 197 like are they all the same or is there cloth and leather options? Never asked the question of the seller.

I don't see ph1 vee prices holding up as well as ph2's. If I was in the market for a vee, I wouldn't even consider a ph1.

  Clio 182
Personally i would either keep it or sell it, wouldnt want another Clio sport range after owning a Vee tbh (although i have never owned one lol)

My thoughts exactly. Mk1 Vee's just don't seem desirable (compared to mk2's) Starting to look very dated.

As for saying when we're out of this "recession". Who knows when that will be??

As above.

If its a Megane your after why not trade the Vee in?

I just assume Reno would offer me peanuts! Plus would rather buy privately than through a stealer. Do they still make the Megane DCI 175's now that the new model is out?

I am a 197 R27 owner and will give an honest opinion on the car you would be getting. In terms of practicality its pretty decent. You have an ample usable boot, plenty space in the back with or without the recaros. Obviously the car only comes in two door. I don' know if you have kids but I would guess getting them in and out of the back would get quite tiresome after a while. You are also getting a good spec. I have all the things mentioned here (and more :rasp:) so I can tell you its a good spec!

In terms of fuel consumption...well I am being hoenst, its terrible. My journeys are usually short ones stop start traffic. At its absolute worst it was averaging 22mpg for that. However in recent times I have had to travel about a little bit and its got much better. I get 27 to 28 mpg. I did a 500 mile round trip in it and it got 29.8mpg.

In terms of comfort its excellent. On that trip i just mentioned I didnt stop on the way there and I was as fresh as a daisy when i got out at the other end.

In terms of performance its obviously not as rapid as a vee in a straight line but it will put a smile on your face in the corners. Its a very capable car this and it wont dissapoint. The above car looks as though it doesnt have the cup pack but im not sure. If it has then great, if it hasnt I cant comment. I have it as standard and it isnt crashy in the slightest. Takes corners brilliantly and is very composed.

You could do a lot worse my friend, at the end of the day its what suits you the most. You letting go a pretty special car there so don't jump at the first thing you see.

You know what they say about assumption!

Got to be worth a trip to the stealers to see what they offer.

The 197 looks nice, but if you buy it and its not practically suitable you'll be in the same situation you are now.

A ph1 in silver is around £2-3k less than you want for your blue one, not saying your car isnt worth what you're asking but I think you'll really struggle to get it, especially as a ph2 can now be had for not much more. It might be worth doing the deal just to move on the 197. Ask a Renault dealer what they'd give you for the 197 against a meggy, probably more than the vee imo

BTW I wasn't knocking your car, and I understand the value of a rare colour, and I'd take the vee over the 197 any day.

All valid points, I appreciate the input its good to get other peoples opinions. :)

I know the prices of Vee's have dropped through the floor and some Mk2's are coming down to where Mk1's used to be. However there will be some dogs around and also the Mk2's will be due cambeilt & Waterpump changes shortly which needs to be considered as mine cost £1256.00 last year!

Interesting  not sure I want to see it but what does it say about a Mk1 Vee, 32k, 2002?

Is that parkers or Glaciers?

you can't really use a price guide for a car like the vee, those guides take the piss as it is without it being a specialist car. I just tried Whatcar out of interest, it doesn't list the ph1 so I tried a ph2 on a 53 plate with your mileage...

Good advice :approve:

This is a phase 1 Illiad though - Different Kettle of Fish!!!

No. It might be worth a tiny bit more than a silver one but its hardly a "different kettle of fish"

I think your car is overpriced, maybe his is too but I think £500 your way isnt a bad deal. Get him to £1k and you're laughing.

OK it's a specialist car - but a Renault dealer is going to offer you this sort of money - I'd seriously consider the 197 and the 500 quid.

Thing is I'm not desperate to sell the Vee but Ok being honest it would be better if I had a bit bigger car for the baby, but the 182 does the job well. Thing is theres no point selling the vee for 8k as I'd rather just run it forever than give it away!! Its not as if I need to sell it because I can't afford to run it its purely down to practicality. Especially with petrol now being cheap as chips :)

Realy, can you say why?

  • Newer
  • Better Equiped
  • Faster
  • More room
  • Seats 4/5
  • A proper boot.
  • Warranty
  • Build Quality
  • Easier to drive
  • Easier to sell on
  • Better chassis.
  • Better brakes.
  • Cheaper to service (less specialist)

Think you've answered it yourself there. Meg prices have dropped a lot recently though and, regarding trading the vee in, don't think of it as what they're giving for yours, think of it as cost to change.

Still think the 197's not a bad deal and, as said 197 will be easier to shift/ px then the vee.

  None, currently.
I've spent the last few months looking for a Clio 197, and have just bought one. So here's my two pence:

£9-9.5k is about right. As a comparison, a Renault dealer would list it at £10.5-11k.

As for the extras, it's missing the cup chassis, which I've been told by numerous people is a huge improvement over standard. Not sure if it was available early 2007 though.

I've only had mine two days so I can't help much on MPG, other than that I got 33-34mpg driving it home - a 200 mile journey doing 70-75mph. Note that the gear ratios for 5th and 6th were changed for cars Nov' 07 onwards, so that it's not geared quite as highly. So that might have saved me a bit of fuel (mine's an '08).

If you just wanted cash for your car, you could see what dscars.co.uk would give you for it. The guy who runs it claims to sell loads of Renaultsports and to operate on a low margin.

  182
why dont you chop the 182 in for something more practical? ie a deisel and keep the vee. As in a year or two the vee wont depreciate that much where as the 197 will loose loads!
