does matt not have anything for you on this Mark? Gripper are better locking diffs, but quaiffe require less maintenance.

As this has turned more into a discussion and I know dave no longer wants a diff i've put it in the technical section.

just looking at the cost of them, and it's the same for both. they are one of the more pricey ones compared to other cars annoyingly. It would probably be cheaper to have the gripper, plus you can get a different crown wheel fitted (not sure if quiaffe supply that). Can't remember how much they were going for on the group buy.

Debating. It's more the lower final drive, rather than the diff that's appealing tbh

Well just spoke to gripper and they had 3 in stock yesterday now sold out and a minimum 6 week lead time arrggghh :-(

Well thats a bugger then as I hate waiting for anything.. I wait for this I wait for that I wait for parcels to arrive I wait for powder coating to be done my whole bloody life is one damned waiting period. I need to build myself a custom waiting room where I can sit while I wait for all this s**t to turn up.

Well we made the decision,Quaife it is.Leaving ratio's as they are as the thing spins the wheels in 3rd anyway,so there's no point.
I can tell you it's good.

I suppose the only way to limit the slip would be to get Matt to fit his TC system to the car. has the diff stopped the spinning much?

I have a Gripper plated diff in 172cup with ITB's .... would LOVE to tell you how amazing it is, and how it totally changed the cars behaviour on track.

Honestly? I really couldnt tell the difference!! definately not worth the £1k in my experience unless its for a racecar where every tenth of a second counts.


I do loads of trackdays and am doing all the Renault sport ones this year if anybody wanted to try a Gripper diff in a Clio then they are welcome to have a drive.

In my experience a decent set of slicks made a MUCH bigger difference.... but the biggest difference was having Mark Fish setting the car up and speccing all the spring rates and geo etc etc...

FYI Quaife have stock in at the moment Matt if you choose to go this route. Only downside is you can't change the final drive with quaife as they don't supply the option to. Its a uprated oe spec in that sense.

I was speaking to Colin ( Shiftspark) and will be fitting the Quaife as I'd said before in the Pug it gained me on average 3 seconds on the tighter sprint/ hillclimb events, with the Clio the cost is a big factor but the gains are worth it for competition or big power hikes, I'd say Gripper for full Competition and Quaife for rd going / track car, as the lads who run the Burpspeed car have said it's a fit and forget item and may be a little compromise over a Gripper but don't think it'll be noticable, the Grippers gain I'd say is in being able to drive the car with a broken drive shaft probably only of use for Stage rallying.

I broke a driveshaft with a Gripper in my Clio and I lost ALL drive.... I know what should happen in theory. But in practice I had zero drive to the other wheel.

I've just used my Gripper diff'd car for the first time last weekend in a Hillclimb, i have to say on the road you done feel the difference too much but when i was competing at the weekend the difference was night and day over the standard box. The car pulls so well out of corners now.

I also managed to go over 4 secs quicker over the standard box time on a 1 mile course, which was handy.

Yeah I was really chuffed with my times. Sadly I was having other gearbox issues due to it popping out of third all bloody day so I ended up driving one handed for most of it.

Know the feeling on that one,did a whole Rally once with box the jumping out of third every time I lifted off,real pain.

I have a Quaife unit fitted in my track car, it makes a big differance. I had to alter my driving style quite a bit.

Considering the amount of work to take the box out and split the box I would never even consider a plate diff.

^ it took agency less than 10 mins to strip my box and hand me the diff ! I suspect it will take a tad longer to build it lol
