Quite a few big problems with new coilovers .....

  Golf TDI
FIrst thing im having trouble with as that my front wheel/tyre is rubbing on the spring that is sat in the coilover which is also then turning my spring !

sencondly , i cant remember wheres its coming from front / back but basically smoke coming from tyres rubbing on stuff ! ? .

next thing is has anyone on here made modifications to their arches so that they can have their car low ? as mine seem to catch the bumper / lip on the wing . im thinking of , as its only plastic trimming the inside lip off !

also what is the correct order of fitting fk highsport front struts ? as i think how iv done it is completely wrong ! and before anyone says it sounds a death trap , its now off the road due to these problems . hopefully i can get some help . :dapprove:

garage mate. if the tyre is catching the spring then either you have the wrong type of coiloer fitment for the car or somethingelse. hard to say without seeing what you mean.

as regards to getting it low. get some1 to set it up propily for you. they may advise spacers, or adjustable camber. will 100% have to take he arches out though.

  Golf TDI
is dropped 120 mm !! f0xy's suspension . its not even drivable so i cant get it to a garage :(

  Golf TDI
when i get a chance , been reallly busy . just need to get it working again as i need my car loads .

  BMW M135i
Which wheels? -120mm will deffo need the arch liners out for sure, i'd try winding the fecking back up some.

these were my coilovers, this is what i had

archliners out defo, not a chance with the height they were at

i HAD to run 7mm spacers on the front to make it miss the shock on the inside

my wheels were ET37, it was fine for me.....if your wheels are any different you may need bigger/smaller spacers

i had 16" with 195/45/16 tyres.

  Golf TDI
so if i fit the struts in the correct order , fit spacers and take the archliners out then i should be ok ! everythings fine on the rear see . just checked my tyres and they are 205 /45 's how will this effect it compared to foxy's 195 / 45 's ?

205 will just mean you need slightly larger spacers, i had to run 7mm just to clear the shock......you will need slightly larger with 205's........but it all depends what you have the camber set at

  Golf TDI
camber basically being what angle i pull the discs back out too before putting the bolts back in ? so 10mm spacers would probably be advisable aswell as removing archeliners ! and btw the rear looks amazing . thanks .

:)

camber yeah, the holes are slotted, its the angle of the wheel in relation to the hub......make sure its the same on both sides

also get the car tracked asap when its all ok so the tyres dont wear really really quick, it will be a fair way out if youve gone really low

  Golf TDI
last thing , then im gonna stop asking questions and just get on with it , is can anyone remember the sequence the front shocks all go together from bottom right up until the top strut ? also foxy did you only have spacers on the front im assuming so ......fk hubcentric ones the best to get ? :) what does hubcentric mean compared to no hubcentric ?

should have........

top mount
----chassis
big rubber top mount thing, with a nut on top of it
then the bearing
then the coilover top (brass thing)
then the main spring
then the helper spring
---bolted onto hub

i had just some universal 7mm ones, but if your going 10mm get hubcentric ones yes........hubcentric means they are a perfect fit to the hub, so the spacer cant move around behind the wheel, alot better

i only had them on the front yes

  Golf TDI
f**k i fitted them with the brass peice as my new top mount :O used the transport nut to bolt that on !! i feel a dull t**t , thats where half my problems probably lie ! gonna purchase some spacers tonight .

  Golf TDI
i know what im doing now . im quite good mechanically , just i wasnt quite sure how to assemble the front struts . rear is fine . Got a older lad at work that knows a bit about cars so first thing monday morning we are gonna just take all the front off , start again . then hopefully by tuesday i might have some spacers turn up .

  Golf TDI
right , fitted the front coilovers all correct and removed my archliners so there is absolutely minimal rubbing , also fitted some 5mm universal spacers so that the wheels dont rub against the suspension coils . 2 problems left , first of all there is still rubbing on the coils on the one side ?? ( can this be sorted witht the camber ?? ) and also one of the struts the adjuster is very stiff so i cant quite wind it up a bit !! any ideas how to wind it up ? its the lower side which is still rubbing on the coils .. already soaked the adjuster in wd40 a couple of days ago . any more info and help is much appreciated . thanks .

  Golf TDI
iv sorted this now :D:D front is raised quie a bit but day by day im going to wind it down until its low . . also the rear wheels are rubbing a bit so tomorrow night im having my arches rolled !

  Golf TDI
although the car is now drivable i am still not too happy as the front just isnt quite low enough to match the rear ! the coilovers will wind down even more on the front just this is the front limit without to much rubbing

that is well low!! the front looks almost a perfect match to the back. look at the sill, it is the same distance from the ground the whole way along. if you lower the front more the car is going to be leaning forwards. leave it as it is.

good luck with speed bumps.

thanks , thats how i want it , all level . :)

you are just way too low , asking for trouble especcially with no camber- bolts / setup

+ you've also got 205 tyres on there have'nt you ? that adds to your trouble

  Golf TDI
so being 195 what dimension is that changing ? also how have they got adjustable camber ? btw your car looks well strange standard in you progress thread lol

lol ;) its so wierd driving a standard car, lol!

195, the width of the tyre is changing.

they have adjustable camber because the holes on the shock that go through the hub are slotted, allowing camber to be adjusted.......i set the coilovers to max negative camber once...

so i know its possible ;)

  Golf TDI
i think i get you . so with thinner tyres , the spring problem will most probably be taken away . as its only evert so slightly touching them . how did you manage going so low on the front ? when you went over big bumps/ potholes did they rub on the edge of the arch .

195 tyres are slightly thinner yes, i still had to run spacers to clear the shock though (but i had a bit of negative camber) so it wouldnt rub on the outer arch

  Golf TDI
no point in going out and getting the smaller tyres quite yet then . wait until iv got rid of most of the bracket . then see how i get on . running 5mm spacers at the front as it is .

  RS RIP
get Cup turini wheels, they stick out more ;)

this is why i only have the bumper bracket rubbing, nothing else
