R-Sport 172 ECU

Anyone have any news on when itll be available for the 172 (not Cup)?

I didnt get a chance to speak to R-Sport @ Donnington, but Im hoping itll be out soon, otherwise itll have to be a save-up-and-go-for-Roamers-throttle-bodies option!

I think it works in the 172 anyway. Its just the engine management, not the rest of the stuff. Hillpower can tell you more I believe, as they are offering a supply & fit deal.

According to an earlier post elsewhere, the Cup ECU has a few less functions than the 172 one, hence the incompatibility.

Or, it could just be a cunning plan to charge more for the 172 one!!

well all an ecu is is a cmos chip with software written on it its the software that says what it does and does not do like the cup one says does it have air con yes/no no

the 172 one says yes its as simple as that

if the software dont have theoption in it it wont work but the engine will still work but the air con wont as its the same engine also the lights wont work and various other bits but hey ho you could start messing with the loom and connect the rsport chip to just provide the new map

i think this is right could be wrong tho lol

i would think ABS and TC would be the main concerns with fitted a R-sport Cup ECU to a 172. As Cups do come with Climate nowadays.

i know thats what im saying all they are is switches and you could splice the ecus together one to provide the creature comforts and the other to provide the engine map

So, the question must be, does the R-Sport ECU work on a Cup with air-con? If it doesnt then the incompatibility theory is stronger. If it does however, there may be hope for us 172 owners!

I have a feeling that the ecu has the same function set in both the 172 and cup, so if there is an aircon system, and its plugged/wired in itll work, otherwise the ecu takes no notice of it and does nothing about it.

Surely, it would be easier getting a Unichip as this keeps your standard ECU (to support all the 172 goodies + Reno diagnostics) .....plus.... the car is RR tuned specifically for your car ......and will support any future mods (eg. IK, zorst etc). The RSport is no better than an "average" Superchip upgrade at the end of the day. Everybody goes on about "fast" and "slow" 172s. If you have a "slow" 172 an RSport will just make it a faster "slow" car .....if you understand my drift?

I take your point.... I would appear to have a reasonably quick 172 - it put out 172bhp on BB Tunings RR and is quick enough on track against other 172s.

Im not convinced about the Unichip as its an add on and, AFAIK, relies on the knowledge of the fitter to set it up properly. Ive spoken to a few fitters and none of them either have much/any experience with 172s and/or dont recommend it!!

Does anyone know the origin of the R-Sport ECU - is it simply a GrpN one in disguise?

I fitted the RSport ECU to Neil82cups Cup a while back. He reckons its got better bottom end torque and obviously revs to higher limits, which I reckon is probably in the trailing edge of the power band. PM Neil, but Im sure he feels that it didnt do much to rock his boat!

Phoned R-Sport today, who werent able to comment as the main contact wasnt in (Jonathon). I asked if their ECU worked on a Cup with AC - surely the first tell-tale sign that it would also work on a normal 172? Well see what they say tomorrow...

LOL the woman who was looking after the car at Donny, just wouldnt talk specifics about the ECU

She was either treating me like a girl or just didnt know herself !!!

Nice car shame about the driver who took me out in it :p

Dont forget that 172s have ABS + EBD too...dont wanna lose that now do you.

If it supports those then Im up for one on my mk1

The R-Sport Cup at donny had a new manifold, new cam, lovered suspention (coil overs) diffrent brakes and the ECU of course....

Not very specific, like i said  but it gives you an idea, that its more than just the ECU !!!

Oh and a whacking great bonnet vent !!!

If the R-Sport car was the one with the daft stick-on bonnet vent, then it wasnt that quick. I remember from Donningon that it was behind me a few times and certainly didnt have enough extra power to out pace me on the straights.
