RAM Question

mas

Car  MK7 GTD & Mini GP
I currently have Corsair DDR2 XMS2 800mhz PC6400 RAM

2gb, working as a matched pair.

his ram runs at latencys of 5-5-5-12

Well, I am looking at ugrading and getting 2gb more, of this:

OCZ Reaper HPC (Heat Pipe Conduit) - Dual Channel 2GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 Gaming Ram (2x1GB DIMM)

This runs at latencys of 4-4-4-15

Would it work ok and correctly?

My system is a dual core 2.66ghz, and uses an asus p5k motherboard.

thanks!

Yeah, but you would be better off selling what you currently have and getting 2x2gb.

Bear in mind that your other ram has higher latencies, the OCZ will run at 5-5-5 etc, it would be best to get more of the same if you dont want to get a 2 x 2gb kit

Tbh I would just get the same RAM as you have now. The new memory will have to run at the same speed and latency as the old stuff. Plus it probably uses different chips and they may not be compatible with each other.

I'd always use 4x1 over 2x2 and also all 4 memory sticks identical, you can get away with no probs but if you start having crashes it's a pain to troubleshoot and then resolve, best off just taking those possibilities out of the equation

You can pickup another 2x1 kit of XMS2 for well under £60 now, just make sure you get the C5 with same 5-5-5-12 timings

all of the latest and best kits tend to come as 2x 2gb now tough

Yeh, have just noticed that too, was speaking from my own experiences and various posts by others over at OCUK, theres a few threads about this here, looks like its a split between 4x1 v 2x2 so maybe comes down to £

well, is the OCZ beter because of its latencies and just in general?

thanks

Memory by Crucial, Corsair, Geil and OCZ is much of a muchness all things considered, especially the ones with heat spreaders

Theoretically the C4 memory is better than C5 but tbh your hard pushed to notice the difference, I mean DDR3 memory is even higher latency, its the speed/bandwidth thats more important, most quality PC-6400 800MHz will o/c to between 900-1000MHz

In your case, I'd opt for another 2 sticks of what you already have

if u get some, invest in some thermal paste, its only like a 10er and its really good for keeping your system cool - also get some heat-sinks
