Rattling noise at 3000 - 4000 revs

  172 MKII FF
Hi,

My Clio 172 02 reg has started making a ringing noise when accelerating in 2nd and 3rd gear upto 3000 - 4000 revs, after this is settles down. When I bought the car several week back their was a slight rattling noise but I am noticing it more now. It seems to come from under the front passenger side of the car. It sounds like high putch rattling noise. It's very annoying and wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction as to what it could be.

Thanks,

Hi, where did you get your cam changed? My car is nearly 5 year old and will need doing soon.

Cool, i'm going to go to Kwik-Fit tomorrow and get them to have a quick look. Are they likely to charge me for diagnosing the problem?

You can lay down next to car, be sure that the car (exaust) is not hot, the hit wit you hand the silencer if it sound like something loose inside You can be sure that the silencer is damaged inside, I also heard about something similar with the cat, the porcelain inside sometimes cracked and makes a rattling sound

Chears!

Ok, so I took the car to Kwik Fit yesterday and they had it up on the lift thing. One mechanic revved the engine whilst one watched, almost immediately he spotted it was a broken spring bolt (he called it a exhaust fitting bolt) which connects at the front of the exhaust. They said it was no problem to replace and would take 5 minutes. When he had a proper look at it he realised he couldn't get it off without burning it off AND that he couldn't put a new one on because none of the mechanics could get their hands round through the engine too add a new one.

I watched and he showed me, so I know they aren't fobbing me off. He advised that I go back to Renault because they would drop the bottom section of the engine to get at the bolt.

I asked if it was a critical job and whether it was affecting my exhaust in any way and he said no, it just depends on if you can afford to take it to Renault. Otherwise i would just have to put up with it.

Anyone recommend anything, or shall i just put up with it?

I'd try a long 3/8 Extension with a long 10mm socket on the end, using a u/j if you need to, and take it off. If the u/j is flapping around too much, put a bit of electrical tape round it, so it bends slightly. Should be able to get it up there going above the exhaust.

Would be loads easier on a ramp, get it to a specialist.
