Re-wiring garage...

Got a consumer unit under the stairs, and a garage separate from the house. Want to run power safely to the garage for a few strip lights and a couple of plugs.

Do I need to dig a trench, or can I go overhead?

Where do I start?

Anyone know of any guides on th'interweb?

Can only seem to find US guides online.

get an electrician in, there are alot of variables to it depending on material of garage has it other services in it? what earthing system at mains? its up to you, but you can run it overhead using proper support cable and hooks or underground to certain depths. Not really so much of a guide as lots of variables.

If you choose to bury the cable it needs to be 18inchs underground and in steel wire armoured cable with "warning electrical tape" over it.

If you choose to go overground then you need to ensure that it is again in steel wire armoured and suppourted using an appropriately sized catinery wire.
