Rear Coilovers - need for turretting?

  Ph2 Clio 172
Used the search, and come up with nothing definitive.

Referring mainly to a Ph1 172 here

Want to know that if rear turretting is necessary to install rear coilovers? or is it just recommended?

Another question, if necessary - is that purely for strength purposes?
ie: the top shock mount wasn't designed to be the load bearing part of the rear suspension, and if that's the answer, does it still count on a stripped out car, with no weight in the back.

Furthermore, would stitch welding around the seams of the current turretts not suffice?

or

Is it space related?
ie: that you need to move the whole coilover body inwardly, so the inside of the tyre doesn't foul against the spring itself.

It'd be great for those people actually running rear coilovers to reply, aswell as those that 'have heard' of X, Y and Z

Thank in advance
