Rear Disc Help

Failed MOT on wheel bearing. Bought 2x OEM rear discs inc. the conical spacers. Tried:

* Tap rotate tap rotate tap rotate tap rotate etc
* 2x pry bar between disc and hub from opposite sides simultaneously
* Butane torch on stub axle/bearing
* Slide some 10mm thick steel between disc and hub, insert wheel bolts and try to tighten up


Next idea is buying some M12*40 bolts and winding them through the disc to push the disc off (being careful of wheel speed sensor)

Also concerned about how best to get new discs on given how tight the tolerances are. Any tips?


Heating bearing up with butane torch and hitting disc, rotate, hammer, rotate etc worked well until this happened:

I suggest you get a copper hide hammer, the sledgehammer you used is no good.

The new new OEM discs shouldn't need any force to get them on. Once you've got that off just clean it up a little.

No in all seriousness having tried a butane torch on the bearing itself (for a few seconds I may add!) the disc became brittle enough to eventually fail on the 9000th hit.

The new new OEM discs shouldn't need any force to get them on. Once you've got that off just clean it up a little.

I'll have a look for one. I used a rubber mallet (which only served to f*** the bearing more, didn't move the inner race away from the hub at all) & a steel hammer.

Mine just slid off and new ones just slid on nicely without force. i think you best option would be to get those longer bolts and slowly screw it off, making sure you turn each bolt a couple of turns at a time to keep the force symmetrical.

p.s any long bolt will do that fits through the hole if you cant get m12's. Just need to screw a nut on the back after pushing it through.

FML. I would not describe the new one as "slid on nicely without force" on the side that I did manage to get off either! Going to attempt to get it off and put a little more copper grease on.

missing its bearing spacers hence why its stuck on!

That would explain it. One side came off (eventually) and I couldn't see a spacer, just assumed it had flown the other side of the garden with the remains of the bearing inner race. For what it's worth I bought some spacers from Adam just in case when I got the discs. Turning into a PITA job!

For anyone searching this in years to come...


Two M12 x 1.5mm PITCH (!!!) worked an absolute charm for separating the disc from the remains of a bearing :p Nip up against hub and them breaker bar/rattle gun them a few turns at a time.

That extra bit of force in the correct direction loosened up the remains of the bearing just enough to get it off with a massive pry bar.
